Brooklyn Nets Reportedly Unlikely to Sign Carmelo Anthony

Written by on September 23, 2019

Carmelo Anthony‘s road to NBA redemption continues.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, it’s “very unlikely” that the Brooklyn Nets use a roster spot to sign Carmelo Anthony. As SNY previously reported, it appeared as though the Nets were leaning toward signing Melo because of the lasting impression he made on their players. Anthony participated in unofficial team workouts that were orchestrated by Kyrie Irving this summer in Los Angeles. Melo was in great shape and one of the better players on the court. As a result, several Nets players were interested in adding Melo to the roster.

This feeling doesn’t seem to be echoed by Brooklyn’s front office. Per Charania, the Nets plan to keep Wilson Chandler on their roster through his 25-game suspension. This would allow them to recoup over $580,000 in unpaid salary and sign a 16th player. Although the 15-man rotation is filled, Brooklyn still has two training camp slots available. If Melo were to be in consideration as their 16th man, he would have to be invited to the training camp and show his worth to the team executives.

Instead of going with the whispers of their players, the Nets will look to sign a player they’ve worked out in the past few weeks. The likely candidates to get the two training camp slots are Lance Thomas and CJ Williams. The two will then compete for the last available roster spot.
