BTS’ Jimin Crushes Drake’s SoundCloud Record With First Solo Single

If you’re understandably sick of reading about new streaming records being set and broken on a continuous basis, then the contents of this article probably won’t interest you much. But if numbers are your jam, you should know that a streaming record previously held by Drake has now been toppled by way of the debut solo single from Jimin of BTS.
“약속 (Promise)” arrived via SoundCloud on New Year’s Eve, quickly amassing more than a million streams within literal minutes of its release. All told, at least according to stats shared with Forbes by a SoundCloud rep Thursday, the song garnered more than 8.5 million streams within its first 24 hours of availability, giving it the most streams of any SoundCloud song on the first day of release. At the time of this writing, the track was nearing 17 million total plays in less than a week.
The previous holder of this particular streaming title was—you guessed it—Drake, whose King Push-concerning “Duppy Freestyle” haul totaled 4.9 million streams in its first 24 hours.
Streaming records being temporarily held and promptly broken (rinse, repeat) have been a prominent fixture among Drake-related news happenings since the release of his 25-track (!!!) Scorpion opus. Bizarrely absent from these discussions, sadly, is arguable album high point “Summer Games.” Maybe Jimin can step up and break his own newly set record with a surprise cover of the synth-drenched insta-classic.
Meanwhile, Scorpion is among the 2018 releases competing for the Album of the Year prize at next month’s 61st Grammy Awards.
