Buffalo Bills Release Running Back LeSean McCoy

Written by on September 1, 2019

After a career-low performance in 2018, LeSean McCoy has been released by the Buffalo Bills. As ESPN reports, McCoy ran only 514 yards in 2018, and now he’s leaving the team just as he was poised to enter the final year of his five-year contract with the team. He was initially acquired by Buffalo in a trade with Philadelphia Eagles, whom he played with from the 2009 to 2014.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane confirmed the decision, and said that it was “last minute” due to the good performance of Devin Singletary during the preseason. The Buffalo Bills did initially considering trading him, but an offer was never received or sent.

“We did look around to see if there was a right fit but we didn’t find one,” Beane explained. “This kind of gives him a chance to choose his destination, as well, and he’s earned that.”

McCoy reportedly didn’t expect to be let go during the preseason, and sources close to the league have said that he is “frustrated” by the decision. Veteran Frank Gore was recently added to the roster, and the Bills are reportedly happy with Singletary under his wing without McCoy involved.

The 31-year-old running back performed inconsistently during his time with the Bills, faltering in his first year. In the two seasons that followed, however, he topped 1,100 years rushing.
