Cardi B on People Being Xenophobic Over Coronavirus: ‘Do We Really Want Smoke With China?’

Written by on March 23, 2020

In this time of self-isolation, Cardi B has been consistent with her coronavirus coverage. During her recent Instagram Live session, Cardi recognized that this can be a frustrating period for people. But, she doesn’t condone any prejudice waged against Chinese and/or East Asian people.

“Lets stop being xenophobic. Let’s stop saying fucked up jokes. Let’s stop having crazy anger because I’ve been seeing a lot of Asians get beat up and all that shit,” Cardi B said.

The coronavirus has created a spike in xenophobic and racist antics around the world. Because the coronavirus has been traced back to China, many people are blaming all East Asians for the global pandemic. Earlier this month, a Singapore man of Chinese ethnicity was brutally beaten while studying abroad in London. Per CNN, the “racially aggravated assault” was stemmed from anger caused by the coronavirus.

Also, President Trump’s administration has reportedly been referring to the virus as the “Kung Flu.” When asked if calling the virus the “Kung Flu” or “Chinese Virus” is inflammatory, Trump said that the terms are appropriate because the virus originated in China.

“No, no, no,” Trump said per The Hill. “Not at all. I think they probably would agree with it 100 percent. It comes from China. There’s nothing not to agree with.”

Instead of furthering this behavior with offensive rhetoric, Cardi decided to remind people that we’re one human race that needs to work together in this time of despair. She also warns politicians to watch what they say about China because of the country’s tremendous economic power.

“Let’s all be one race,” Cardi continued. “Because at the end of the day—in the eyes of God—we’re all one. People make certain white jokes that be xenophobic, but it be so harmless. When people represent a country, I feel like that’s not right to do. Because let’s ask ourselves this, do we really want beef? Do we really want smoke with China?”
