Where does it stack up next to a city like Atlanta?</strong><br />I feel like New York is starting to get the sound back. I feel as though like, I hear a lot of people say New York had this type of flow, that type of flow. But I say, “Man, y’all just ain’t tapping into the artist that’s grinding underground.” There are multiple artists out here that’s really got that sound that y’all just aren’t tapping into. They be saying, “No, New York sounds like this, like that.” Y’all just got to do the groundwork and shit. At the end of the day, we just got to work hard. At the end of the day, us New York rappers, we just got to work hard so that these people can know who we are. </p> <p><strong>What do you think is the biggest misconception about you? What do people get wrong? </strong><br />They probably just think I’m just a mean person. They think I’m just some aggressive woman. I am aggressive, but I still have a heart<strong>. </strong>I still want to be loved and hugged and nurtured by a strong little man. I’m just an aggressive woman because all my life I’ve had to survive and fight, so I come off like that because niggas ain’t going to play with me. But at the end of the day, I’m a nice person. So probably that.</p> <p><strong>I know there’s an unfortunate story behind your stage name. How did you reclaim such a negative experience and turn it into something empowering for you as an artist?</strong><br />So growing up as a little Black girl, especially in the system, having this scar on my lip, people used to tease me, make fun of me, bully me. Say, “Ew, what’s that on her lip? Does she have herpes?” They would say I’m infected. And growing up it made me feel very insecure about myself looking in the mirror. I was just angry. I was like, “Yo, I’m ugly.” I thought I was ugly because everybody told me and because of how my lip was. And I’m just like, as I grow older and grow older, it’s either you’re going to become your trauma or you’re going to heal and you’re going to just own it.</p> <p>So I was like, “I’m going to own this. I’m going to turn my pain into my power.” And I said like, my name’s Scar Lip. So if I call myself Scar Lip, anything somebody says about me can’t affect me and they can’t say anything about me because this is who I am. And now it’s my scar. My scar is my brand. I just turned my pain into my glory.</p> <p><strong>I think what makes you unique is the emotion in all of your verses. Does rap feel like therapy to you? </strong><br />Yeah, my poetry especially, I use my poetry. When I’m sad I make music, when I’m happy, when I’m upset. But that angry shit, that’s “This is New York.” I was angry. So every time I’m mad, I go to music. I even listen to other people sometimes. Like Billie Eilish, she helped me in my depression stages.</p> <p><strong>Where does that strength to persevere come from?</strong><br />I think faith, hope, and God, because what else could it be, you know what I mean? I just have faith in myself. I got hope. And when you come from the foster care system, when you come from being one of those kids that were counted out and you get a shot, that’s all you really need is that shot. You’re just going to keep going, grinding, because that’s all you got. Rhymes was spotted walking in an unknown location among a group of people when […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br /> </p> <div> <p>A woman was seen invading <a href="https://www.complex.com/tag/busta_rhymes" target="_self" rel="noopener">Busta Rhymes</a>’ personal space, resulting in a drink being thrown at her. </p> <p>On Tuesday, footage of the “I Know What You Want” rapper went viral after a spectator posted a video of him splashing a drink on someone in public. Rhymes was spotted walking in an unknown location among a group of people when a woman came up close behind him, reached out, and touched his butt. </p> <p>Due to a lack of boundaries, the rap icon became agitated and threw his drink at the stranger. With bystanders being splashed, people cleared out of the way staring in shock. At the same time, Busta’s team huddled between the MC and Mathias.</p> <p>The woman, Nikita Mathis, released a statement to the Shade Room responding to the viral chaos that erupted and admitting to wrongfully touching the icon.</p> <p>“I didn’t mean to touch his behind honestly I was just happy to meet him and wanted a pic been a long time fan I admit I shouldn’t have touch<em> [sic]</em> him at all but he’s BUSTA. I felt like I could possibly get a pic,” the outlet quoted Mathis.</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>Rhymes has yet to comment on the incident. </p> <p>On Feb. 5, Busta was seen hitting the 2023 Grammy stage in celebration of the <a href="https://www.complex.com/music/a/ecleen-luzmila/grammys-hip-hop-50-tribute-story" target="_self" rel="noopener">50th anniversary of hip-hop tribute</a>. He was among many artists that helped pioneer the genre into what we see today. He performed his legendary guest verse from <a href="https://www.complex.com/tag/chris_brown" target="_self" rel="noopener">Chris Brown</a>’s “Look at Me Now,” which also features <a href="https://www.complex.com/tag/lil_wayne" target="_self" rel="noopener">Lil Wayne</a>. I was like, I’m going to make beats that are like this and then I’m going to try and get some artists on it. And that’s how I tend to do things with dance music. So I approached it in the same way and I was like, I’ll just make beats, except they’ll sound like this, but they’ll still clearly be electronic beats. Jay-Z, Twista, T.I., Nas, and Tech N9ne were among the names that were tossed around. But if you ask <a target="_blank" style=", sans-serif;font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400" href="https://www.complex.com/tag/e-40" rel="noopener">E-40</a>, there’s one rapper who would dominate Em in a battle of hits: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/tag/busta-rhymes" rel="noopener">Busta Rhymes</a>.</p> <p>The Bay Area legend addressed the possible showdown during a recent appearance on <em>Jalen & Jacoby</em> podcast.</p> <p>“Busta Rhymes would eat Eminem in a <em>Verzuz</em> battle. I really believe that,” E-40 said. “Busta Rhymes goes crazy. Because, now, it’s turned into a performance type of situation. Busta Rhymes is animated. He got gas. He raps fast, all that. He do all that stuff that Eminem do. And Busta Rhymes got up-tempo slaps that get the party goin‘. Anytime you got up-tempo slaps, you’re gonna win.”</p> <p>E-40 made it clear he has nothing but love for Marshall Mathers and acknowledged his impact on the hip-hop culture.</p> <p>“Eminem is so legendary. You know, definitely. Can’t take nothing away from him,” he continued. “Great hits, great style—I mean, he’s legendary, he’s an icon …”</p> <p>E-40 went on to imply that Busta’s discography is widely slept on, as many people aren’t aware of all his contributions.</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>“I feel like Busta Rhymes gots what it takes to bring it to the surface, man, to let people say, ‘Damn, I didn’t even know he had all these hits, man’ …” he said. “The stuff he did with Mariah (Carey) and the stuff he did with Craig Mack, and he got his own slaps, bro. And he’s animated.”</p> <p>E-40 joking told the hosts to get Verzuz co-founder Swizz Beatz on the phone: “He and Timbaland need to make this happen.”</p> <p>Swizz is clearly open to an Eminem and Busta <em>Verzuz</em> battle, as he suggested the event on Dr. Dre’s Instagram page. Earlier this week, Dre posted a video of Slim Shady delivering a rapid-fire flow, and captioned the clip with, “Marshall Mathers vs Who???!!”</p> <p>And it seems there was only one name that came to Swizz’s mind: “BUSTA !!!!!!!!!!! Michael K. Williams also appeared, leading some to petition for him to play DMX in the inevitable biopic.</p> <p>Swizz previously <a href="https://www.complex.com/music/swizz-beatz-curates-dmx-tribute-bet-awards" target="_self" rel="noopener">caught up with Complex</a> to discuss the work that went into the tribute, celebrating X’s legacy and the energy he brought to his live performances. Swizz explained that the performance, which he helped produce alongside creative director Fatima Robinson, wasn’t like anything before it.</p> <p>“You see a lot of tributes and you can almost predict [what’s going to happen],” Swizz shared. “This time we wanted to do something a little different. We wanted to add some curation and [include] different types of artistry. Everybody that’s coming on stage, X had a serious respect for them.”</p> <p>Of course, Swizz is the mastermind behind the production on X’s posthumous album, <em>Exodus</em>, which was released earlier this month.
