<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/joshuavides/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joshua Vides</a> is a creative marvel in true form. </p>
<p>Having lent his artistic powers to design products for brands like New Balance, BMW, Converse, Fendi, Puma and others, the California-based creative director is never short on innovation. For more than a decade, Vides has fused his passion for streetwear and graffiti and poured it into his craft. His production studio <a href="https://reality-to-idea.com/pages/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reality to Idea</a> has served as the perfect incubator for his footwear and apparel designs, sketch artwork and other creations to take shape. </p>
<p>Before becoming a premiere name in streetwear and design, Vides worked for The Hundreds, SSUR, The Seventh Letter and ComplexCon as a designer, salesman and marketing manager in 2009. Around the same time, he founded the streetwear brand CLSC, a $500 project that later became a global entity with 400 retailers and a storefront on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. </p>
<p>Vides decided to step away from CLSC in April 2017 and used the brand’s success as momentum to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. Vides launched Reality to Idea in January 2018, and the design studio and production house has been a platform for him to explore his love for black and white monochromatic mediums and spread his wings artistically. Whether designing sneakers and apparel pieces, customizing iconic BMW silhouettes or putting on limited edition art exhibits, Vides has shown no signs of slowing up. And his recent collaboration with Gillette at this year’s ComplexCon is proof. </p>
<p>The brand’s design and innovation hub, GilletteLabs, and Reality to Idea came together for an activation booth that offered an interactive look at the shaving experience. The Reality To Idea-designed booth highlighted GilletteLabs’ latest innovation, GilletteLabs with Exfoliating Bar, a razor that combines shaving and exfoliation technology. And as a continuation of the partnership and a testament to Vides’ versatility, he customized cleats for NFL Quarterbacks Josh Allen and Mac Jones for the My Cause My Cleats program. The two football stars wore the cleats during the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills matchup on Dec. 1.</p>
<p>For Vides, the GilletteLabs collaboration, and others he’s stirred over the years, was a chance to embrace his own creative instincts and showcase the power art contains. “As a visual artist, I find collaborations to be an avenue of self-expression on different mediums and products,” Vides explained to Complex. “Showing off how anything can really become a canvas and art Itself.”</p>
<p>Complex recently caught up with Vides to talk about his artistic inspirations, the details of his creative process and how art can be a tool for philanthropy. </p>
<p><em>(The interview has been lightly edited for clarity.) </em></p>
<p><strong>COMPLEX: How was it designing the GilletteLabs activation booth at ComplexCon?</strong></p>
<p>Joshua Vides: ComplexCon is always something I enjoy being a part of. Reality To Idea was excited to partner with Gillette because it’s an iconic brand that most men have used since they first started shaving. They gave Reality To Idea the creative space to help bring their GilletteLabs brand to ComplexCon attendees in an innovative and authentic way. It was a great experience bringing the GilletteLabs booth to life, and everyone at ComplexCon had a great time with the photo booth and shaves with the Gillette Barbers.</p>

<p><strong>How did the collaboration between your company Reality to Idea and GilletteLabs come together?</strong></p>
<p>The collaboration really came together through the common mission that we share. At Reality to Idea, we are always looking for new ways to be at the forefront of culture and innovation. When GilletteLabs approached us to showcase their latest innovation of GilletteLabs with Exfoliating Bar, we knew it would be a cool partnership.</p>
<p><strong>You’ve partnered with some of the biggest brands in the world – Fendi, MLB, New Balance and others – but what about this project piqued your interest?</strong></p>
<p>I’ve been lucky to partner with so many celebrated brands. In the men’s grooming space, Gillette is often viewed as synonymous with the category, so when I was approached, I saw it as an opportunity to bring my skill set to another brand that has an incredible legacy and continues to create innovative products.</p>

<p><strong>What was the inspiration behind the design of the activation?</strong></p>
<p>We wanted the design of the booth to remind people of a barbershop, with a Reality to Idea spin. We used our signature black and white color scheme and added pops of bright green, which is an ode to the exfoliating bar on the GilletteLabs razor and packaging. Gillette wanted to do something completely different than last year’s ComplexCon booth, but (the brand) still wanted to emphasize the unique experience that the barbershop provides.</p>
<p><strong>Could you detail what the creative process was like? Were there any challenges along the way?</strong></p>
<p>I think there are always some unique challenges that present themselves when working with new products, especially when it comes to designing on such a large scale. It was important the GilletteLabs booth and the design of the smaller original pieces we made for the gallery all worked well together in the space.</p>

<p><strong>You designed the cleats of NFL Quarterbacks Josh Allen and Mac Jones ahead of the  New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills game on Dec. 1. How was that experience?</strong></p>
<p>I always enjoy working on shoe projects and collaborations. I have been painting on shoes since high school, so for me, it really feels like second nature. It was awesome to get connected with Josh Allen and Mac Jones, who are Gillette athletes, to work on their My Cause My Cleats cleat designs. I wanted to make sure they felt the design reflected the charities they are both representing – Mac Jones with Boys &amp; Girls Club of America and Josh Allen with the Patricia Allen Fund. I was so happy to play a part.</p>
<p><strong>The designed cleats are being auctioned off and the proceeds will go to charity as part of the My Cause My Cleats campaign. Talk about how important it is for you and other artists to be a part of these kinds of initiatives.</strong></p>

<p>It’s important to me to find ways to give back through my work, and team up with partners who do the same. As an artist, I’m able to showcase the power of art to all different audiences, including through the cleat designs for Allen and Jones. I’m excited to see what the winning bid is for both sets of autographed cleats. Gillette and I will also be matching the donations from the online auction.</p>

<p><a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/offset" rel="noopener">Offset</a> has shut down reports regarding his involvement in a scuffle at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/complexcon-everything-you-need-to-know-before-attending/" rel="noopener">ComplexCon</a>.</p>
<p>The Migos member was among the stars who attended the two-day event at the Long Beach Convention Center over the weekend. As pointed out by <a target="_blank" href="https://hiphopdx.com/news/id.65710/title.migos-rapper-offset-his-entourage-get-into-complexcon-brawl" rel="noopener">HipHopDX</a>, video showed Offset and his crew walking around the venue among attendees, just moments before a physical altercation broke out near the No Jumper booth.</p>
<p>The viral footage captured the 29-year-old rapper wearing a red and gray beanie, red jacket, and matching sneakers with his entourage in tow. The video then shows a couple of the men exchanging a few words as a security guard approaches; seconds later, an unidentified man begins throwing punches at another attendee, prompting security and others to get involved. </p>
<p>Details of the brief brawl have not been revealed; however, Offset wants to make it very clear he was not directly involved with the fight, contrary to earlier reports.</p>
<p>“I wasn’t fighting at ComplexCon. I stepped in to break up a fight caused by a booth’s security,” he told Complex. “The story is false and overshadows why I’m a regular at ComplexCon. I was there to support the culture and emerging brands and designers. I’m focused on that. I’m in a positive space. Appreciate the concern.”</p>

<p>Offset attended Day 2 of the immersive event that fused the worlds of art, food, and entertainment. Billionaire Boys Club, Saucony, Tommy Hilfiger, Timberland, and Champion were among the brands who participated in the Long Beach festivities, which also included appearances by Rihanna, ASAP Rocky, Metro Boomin, J Balvin, and Gunna.</p>

<p>Five minutes before <a href="http://www.complex.com/tag/asap-rocky" target="_self" rel="noopener">ASAP Rocky</a>’s headlining set was supposed to begin at <a href="http://www.complex.com/tag/complexcon" target="_self" rel="noopener">ComplexCon 2021</a>, a group of people rushed into the middle of the crowd. For a few moments, there was confusion as the group made their way through the audience, before ultimately forming a circle around 100 feet from the stage. Then, out of nowhere, Rocky popped up from the middle of the circle and started performing “Grim Freestyle.”</p>
<p>Wearing a Black Scale Funeral snapback hat, a red AWGE flannel, and a white T, he pulled an American flag over his shoulders and rapped in the middle of an arena full of people at Long Beach Convention Center. As he thrashed around in the middle of a chaotic crowd, dressed in throwback threads, you couldn’t help but think of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhKd0YCPIa8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">those wild 2011 performances</a> he used to do in smaller New York clubs back when he first broke through with <em>Live. Love. ASAP </em>a decade ago. It was a fitting beginning to a night that acted as a walk down memory lane for Rocky, who was there to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his iconic debut mixtape.</p>
<p>“If you grew up on this shit, we’re about to have a motherfucking good time,” he said at the top of the show. “We’re going down memory lane. Let’s go through this album.”</p>

<p>Working down the tracklist of the beloved mixtape, which was recently made available on DSPs for the first time, Rocky started at the top with “Palace,” “Peso,” “Bass,” “Wassup,” “Brand New Guy,” and “Purple Swag,” stopping between songs to reminisce on his early days running around New York City with the ASAP Mob. Putting a new twist on otherwise faithful renditions of the songs, he brought out a saxophone player for an outro at the end of “Purple Swag,” before members of the Mob joined him onstage for “Trilla.”</p>
<p>When ASAP Ferg came out for “Kissin’ Pink,” the two reminisced on their early days together. Ferg brought up their first tour with Drake, then got sentimental with Rocky. “I wanted to be a fashion designer, and you were like, ‘Yo, bro, we should do this rapping shit,’” he recalled. “And you told my mom, ‘Yo, I promise I’m going to make your son a millionaire and all that shit.’ And she looked at you crazy.”</p>
<p>Rocky responded, “She kicked me out the house,” and Ferg laughed, “She said, ‘Who is this weird ass n***a with a perm in his hair’” Then Ferg got sincere and told Rocky, “This n***a stayed true and we fucking built an empire. I appreciate you and I just want to say I love and admire you.” The two shared a hug, then Rocky shouted out his Houston influences and launched into “Houston Old Head.”</p>

<p>Rocky faithful stuck to the original tracklist of <em>Live. Love. ASAP</em> throughout the night—with one exception. Sensing that energy levels had dipped during “Acid Drip,” he called an audible and played a newer song: his 2018 Skepta collab, “Praise The Lord (Da Shine).” The break for new songs was a short one, though, because he immediately went back to Live. Love. ASAP and played “Leaf” next.</p>
<p>“It feels like yesterday that we were just coming out and shit,” he said a few moments later. “I remember, with these ASAP n***as, feeling like we were ready to change shit for the better. Ten years later, to see all my n***as eating, all my n***as doing well, everybody prospering, just to see the world inspired by the hunger and shit like that… You got me going down memory lane. Some of these songs, I ain’t do since 2011 and shit, so this shit is kind of crazy and surreal for me.”</p>

<p>One thing that’s changed since those early 2011 performances was a member of the audience on Sunday night: Rihanna. She stood next to the stage throughout the performance and cheered on Rocky, who she’s been dating throughout 2021.</p>
<p>Before the second-to-last song, “Demons,” Rocky addressed the tragedy at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival this weekend, where eight fans died. “My prayers go out to everybody who lost their lives in Texas the other day, going to Astroworld Fest,” he said. “My heart goes out to that guy, and everybody who lost their lives. Condolences. I hope everybody gets home safe tonight.”</p>
<p>Rocky finished the set in style, standing on a pillar that raised about 25 feet in the air as he performed the mixtape closer, “Sandman.” Then, as he literally came back down to earth, he let out one final “A-fucking-SAP,” and the house lights turned on.</p>
<p>With that, ComplexCon 2021 ended on a perfect note.</p>

<p>Joining the stacked lineup for the 2021 edition of the carefully curated festival is the dedicated Brands to Watch section. The project first launched back in June 2019 at ComplexCon Chicago and has since become a recognizable favorite in the lineups for both ComplexCon and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/style/2021/06/complexland-brands-to-watch-2021" rel="noopener">ComplexLand</a>. </p>

Love. ASAP</em> on streaming platforms for the first time.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/music/asap-rocky-live-love-asap-mixtape-coming-to-streaming-services/" rel="noopener">Announced earlier this week</a>, the project arrives nearly 10 years to the date of its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/music/2011/10/mixtape-asap-rocky-liveloveasap" rel="noopener">initial release on Halloween 2011</a>, and comes almost fully intact to what the original offered. Features on the project include <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/tag/schoolboy-q" rel="noopener">Schoolboy Q</a>—who Rocky would go on to forge a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/music/2017/07/when-these-rappers-pair-up-something-special-happens/asap-mob-and-tde-link-up" rel="noopener">fruitful collaborative history with</a>—along with ASAP Mob members ASAP Twelvyy and ASAP Nast. The guest list is rounded out by Fat Tony and Main Attrakionz.</p>
<p>Also included on <em>Live. Love. ASAP</em> is “Sandman,” a new track from Rocky that’s produced by Clams Casino and Kelvin Krash which the rapper debuted at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/music/2021/01/watch-full-yams-day-2021-virtual-event-asap-rocky-asap-ferg" rel="noopener">Yams Day 2021</a> and has been performing throughout the year.</p>

The artists creating one-of-a-kind works are James Jean, Mike Kozlowski, Joshua Davis, Victor Mosquera, FVCKRENDER, Mad Dog Jones, PPLPLEASER, Micah Johnson, and ThankYouX.</p>
<p>But the experience doesn’t stop there.</p>
<p>Art lovers will also see a ComplexCon first— an NFT battle. Several groundbreaking creators will go head-to-head in the Battle Zone, produced by Secret Walls. Elise Swopes, Blake Katheryn, Steven Baltay, and Chuck Anderson are a few artists who will create original illustrations on their electronic devices. When completed, their work will be projected on a wall for the audience to decide who’s the winner. Once chosen, the piece will then be made available for purchase as an NFT.</p>
<p>To buy the NFT, attendees are encouraged to download the Coinbase Wallet app so they can store their ComplexCon NFT within their Coinbase Wallet. With some help from hosts Matt Gondek and Steelo Brim, the Battle Zone is sure to blow minds!
