The cycle of making a TV show can be taxing for those involved at every level like he is. <em>Dave</em> can be so all-consuming that it has left his fans waiting eight years for a new Lil Dicky album, something Burd sounds conflicted and a bit tormented about. As much as making <em>Dave</em> has been his dream from the start, a part of him misses music, too.</p> <p>“I feel pretty unsatisfied musically as I’m sure my fans do. It’s not for lack of trying or effort,” Burd says. “Whenever I get a free moment, I work on my album.” He says writing the scripts takes him a few months, shooting the episodes takes three months, and editing takes four months, which also consists of long and grueling days. “It’s impossible for me to come home after a 16-hour day and write a good verse. It’s just never going to happen,” he says. “The saving grace is, at least the show is about a rapper. So if I make a song within those eight years as I have, that I love, I can put it in the show.”</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <figure class="image"> <div class="fimage-container"></div><figcaption>Image via Complex Original/Chandler Kennedy</figcaption></figure> <p>Burd says he has a chip on his shoulder as a rapper and understands his Lil Dicky fans’ frustration and hopes that the new music in Season 3 can help ease that anticipation. As with past seasons, the first three episodes already feature plenty of new musical moments, including one new song in Episode 2 titled “Harrison Ave” that Burd says is one of the best tracks he’s ever made. A lot can change for a person, especially artistically, in eight years. Burd says he has evolved so much as a musician in that time that he feels dissatisfied with the current body of work from Lil Dicky that’s currently available on streaming services. “I’ve just grown so much past that as a musician and as an artist, but there’s no evidence of it out there,” he tells me. “So I’m just chomping at the bit to reframe the type of artist Lil Dicky is.”</p> <p>We live in a world where fans’ hunger for new content is almost impossible to satisfy. But the era of instant gratification can come at the expense of an artist’s creative process and can sometimes leave them feeling pressured to drop something new before it’s ready in order to fulfill their fans’ needs. For some artists like Burd, it’s all about quality over quantity and he knows his true followers are happy with him creating in any way, including the five hours of content they get with each season of <em>Dave</em>. “When I look back, I’m sure I could have put some body of work out four years ago that, honestly, wouldn’t have been as satisfying as what will happen now that I’ve waited,” he adds. “I’m unfortunately not the type of rapper who can go into the studio and come out in one night with six songs made. The new season starts with the crew being on the right foot again, and with the purpose of enjoying tour life and the Lil Dicky hype they have worked so hard to achieve. “It’s not me against a character, it’s like us against the world to some degree,” Burd says about Season 3, which he says will explore different approaches to dating, dating while famous, power dynamics, and gender. “Every episode is this group in a new environment and all we have is each other as far as continuity and what we know to be true. So we’re more on the same team this year as opposed to playing against each other.” That is clear in Episode 1 of the new season, which shows Dave already allowing space for his friends and teammates to shine on their own, away from his spotlight. </p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>In speaking with the cast, it’s easy to tell how fond of each other they are and the work they are doing together. During the photoshoot, the cast behaves like a group of longtime friends that are at ease, playful, and comfortable with one another. There seem to be no egos as well as pure admiration and respect for Burd for taking them on this journey and creating a show they are proud of and believe in. The more we do it, the more in sync we are,” Burd says. “There is a benefit of doing several seasons, having it under your belt, and then when you get to the third season, it’s like we’re just in a rhythm right away, and there are no growing pains.”</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>Burd says creating art that helps people ask themselves questions about themselves in a quest for self-improvement is something he takes pride in. As for the actual content, it feels like Dave’s looking to the future. He may be sporting a shirt with “No time 4 luv” written on the back, but he makes more than a few references to having “found his princess” and settling down with a family.</p> <p>For the video, which Dave co-directed with Nathan Tettey, things are just as restrained. Camped out in a luxury apartment, Dave and star of streetwear brand Corteiz, Clint, kick back in some of the designer’s latest wears. In the midst of all that, we get shots of models strutting down the catwalk with more designer gear, with a few added scenes of Dave and some friends posing for mugshots.</p> <p>“Starlight” is most likely just a one-off loosie for now, but it’ll be interesting to see if Dave’s been cooking anything else up in the studio. It was an historic night, with a lot to celebrate. Dave, who won a MOBO for Best Newcomer back in 2017, was able to complete his arc with a win for Best Album for <em>We’re All Alone In This Together</em>. Meanwhile, Central Cee scooped two awards for Best Newcomer and the first ever Best Drill Act award. Wizkid also won two awards, one for Best African Act and another for Best International Act. On a thematic note, beyond a few basics, it’s anyone’s guess. </p> <p>Two seasons into its run, <em>Atlanta</em> has blended eccentric humor with drama and surrealism to become one of the most inventive shows on the air—and maybe the most unpredictable. The basic plot (Earn finds out his cousin Alfred is bubbling rapper Paper Boi and sets to manage his career) is set, but it’s threaded by comically unexpected detours, meaning that almost nothing about a future episode is telegraphed by the story that came before it. When you throw in three years’ worth of pop culture events to allude to, the next season of <em>Atlanta</em> could be any and everything. </p> <p>Glover’s kept quiet about the new season, so how things shake out is ultimately a big TBD. The title, as we learned from the widely-discussed GQ interview that landed the same day as the announcement, came from a […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br /> </p> <div> <p>Just a few weeks after he officially announced his new album (no long, protracted build-ups here), <a href="https://www.complex.com/tag/dave" target="_self" rel="noopener">Dave</a> has made good on his promise with the release of his second studio album, <em>We’re All Alone In This Together</em>.</p> <p>The title, as we learned from the widely-discussed <em>GQ</em> interview that <a href="https://www.complex.com/music/dave-announces-were-all-alone-in-this-together" target="_self" rel="noopener">landed the same day as the announcement</a>, came from a Zoom conversation Dave had with the iconic film composer Hans Zimmer. That set the tone for a grand album on a scale UK rap hasn’t really seen before, but, at least on first listen, it doesn’t seem like he’s let it go to his head, creatively speaking.</p> <p>It’s a pretty major step away from <em>Psychodrama</em>, at least in tone. That, of course, was a therapy session conducted almost in real time, but <em>We’re All Alone In This Together</em> broadens the subject matter out beyond the introspection—although he still shines a harsh light on himself at times. There are essays upon essays that no doubt will be written about this album, but suffice to say Dave has changed a lot as a writer and as a rapper in the intervening years.</p> <p>The vast majority of production on this one comes from Kyle Evans, who contributed a few of the beats to <em>Psychodrama</em>, but takes much more of a driving role this time round. He’s not the only producer to return from <em>Psychodrama</em>; Nana Rogues co-produces “We’re All Alone” alongside Dave and Evans, JAE5 produces “Law Of Attraction” and co-produces “Lazarus”; and Dave himself is credited as sole producer or co-producer on several of the tracks, too. As for the remaining credits, James Blake makes a noticeable appearance on four of the tracks, while P2J, Mount Kimbie and Dominic Maker round out the cast-list.</p> <section class="suitcase-ad"/> <p>Features-wise, it’s a little more collaborative than <em>Psychodrama</em>. Stormzy joins him on lead single “<a href="https://www.complex.com/music/dave-stormzy-clash" target="_self" rel="noopener">Clash</a>”, and that’s immediately followed up with a dark and cruddy posse cut with Ghetts, Giggs, Meekz Manny and Fredo on “In The Fire”. West African stars Wizkid and BOJ appear prominently on mid-point tracks “System” and “Lazarus”, respectively. Adding more soulful elements to the project, we have Swedish singer Snoh Aalegra on “Law Of Attraction”, and some reverbed voclas from Jorja Smith on “Survivor’s Guilt”. Finally, one of the most talked-about points on the album is an uncredited but stunning appearance from UK rap riser ShaSimone, who plays out the opposing part in a heated breakup on “Both Sides Of A Smile”.</p> <section class="suitcase-ad"/> <p>Naturally, there’s a lot to unpack here and it’s going to take a lot of repeated listens to really unpack it all.
