While the basketball giant is not involved in the film, and doesn’t appear in it either, he made sure to set some ground rules to ensure that this portion of his legendary story was told correctly.</p> <p>He requested for certain details and for specific and influential people to be included in the film before giving Affleck the greenlight to produce and direct the film. Jordan wanted his mom, Deloris Jordan (Viola Davis), to be a focal point in the story, and asked for the inclusion of key people like Howard White (Chris Tucker) and George Raveling (Marlon Wayans) who helped facilitate the partnership.</p> <p>The idea from the script originally came to<a href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/air-writer-alex-convery-interview" target="_self" rel="noopener"> writer Alex Convery</a> while watching the Jordan documentary <em>The Last Dance </em>in 2020<em>, </em>but the script began to shift and take a different shape after Jordan’s input and Affleck and Matt Damon’s involvement. <em>Air</em> tells the story of how talent scout Sonny Vaccaro’s larger-than-life idea to sign Jordan as the face of the brand’s basketball division helped rescue the sportswear company from bankruptcy in 1984, even if it meant blowing the entire budget on just one player.</p> <p>There were a lot of significant people involved in the pitching, decision-making, and creation of the Nike deal with Jordan, and <a href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/air-trailer-canada" target="_self" rel="noopener"><em>Air</em></a> does its best at highlighting its impact in permanently changing the world of sneakers and sports. At that value, […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br /> </p> <div> <p>With his newly inked <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/dior" rel="noopener">Dior</a> deal, <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/johnny-depp" rel="noopener">Johnny Depp</a> is making history.</p> <p>As <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/johnny-depp-dior-biggest-mens-fragrance-deal-1235611017/" rel="noopener">first reported</a> by <em>Variety</em>, Depp will be continuing his longstanding partnership with the brand thanks to a new three-year deal said to be worth “upwards of $20 million.” A source close to the situation has confirmed the details of the deal with Complex.</p> <p>At that value, the deal easily clears an industry record, topping <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/robert-pattinson" rel="noopener">Robert Pattinson</a>’s estimated $12 million deal with Dior Homme to become the most massive men’s fragrance deal to have ever been put in motion.</p> <p>When reached for comment by Complex on Friday, a rep for Depp declined to comment. Complex has also reached out to a rep for Dior for comment. This story may be updated.</p> <p>Last June, a jury sided with Depp in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/tag/johnny_depp" rel="noopener">a libel lawsuit</a> against his former partner Amber Heard. Details of the case flooded headlines for months leading up to and immediately after the decision, with both sides later contesting related judgments in a pair of <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/amber-heard-johnny-depp-entertainment-lawsuits-8d1ff8662929b551b0ef3709c80d067d" rel="noopener">since-settled appeals</a>.</p> <p>Following the end of the highly publicized trial, Depp made a number of high-profile public appearances, including as a guest star in Rihanna’s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/tracewilliamcowen/johnny-depp-rihanna-savage-x-fenty-show-vol-4" rel="noopener"><em>Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 4</em></a>.</p> <p>While some have met these instances of a resurgence with criticism in connection with the aforementioned Heard case, there is currently little sign that such instances are going to slow down. Among the issues detailed in the WGA’s proposals, as seen here, are concerns over the use of A.I. and the blatant need for fairer practices in terms of […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br /> </p> <div> <p>The <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/writers" rel="noopener">Writers Guild of America</a> is now on strike starting on May 2 after <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/capitalism" rel="noopener">studios</a> rejected a number of key proposals during negotiations between them and the association.</p> <p>Among the issues detailed in the WGA’s proposals, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wgacontract2023.org/uploadedfiles/members/member_info/contract-2023/wga_proposals.pdf" rel="noopener">as seen here</a>, are concerns over the use of A.I. and the blatant need for fairer practices in terms of residual pay in the streaming era. In response to the former, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP)—which represents major studios (Disney, Warner Bros, etc.) in these negotiations—was revealed to have rejected the guild’s proposal. Instead, the AMPTP “countered by offering annual meetings to discuss advancements in technology.”</p> <p>As we already detailed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/tracewilliamcowen/writers-guild-of-america-2023-strike" rel="noopener">in our prior coverage</a> of the strike, there is simply no way to overstate just how crucial writers are to film, TV, and beyond. But if history has shown us anything, it’s that corporations and related entities don’t always have writers’ best interests as a priority. And with A.I. now in the conversation, there’s no reason to trust that such tech won’t be used by those with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/life/a/tracewilliamcowen/tech-pioneer-godfather-of-ai-sounds-alarm-google-exit" rel="noopener">bad intentions</a> in a doomed attempt at replacing the inimitable human touch that art requires. </p> <p>This isn’t the first time Hollywood has been in a situation like this one. In November 2007, all 12,000 film and television screenwriters of the American labor unions within the Writers Guild of America went on strike until February 12, 2008. Late-night shows went off the air, movie releases were delayed. and affected shows like <em>Ugly Betty</em>, <em>Heroes</em>, and <em>Girlfriends</em>, saw a major shift in the quality of the content (<em>Girlfriends</em> abruptly ended around this time.)</p> <p>The same is happening now. Late-night shows are already airing tapings of old shows and production has halted for other fan-favorites like Abbott Elementary and Cobra Kai. What follows is a running list of some of the series that have been confirmed at the time of this writing to have been put on hold in light of the strike. In theory, and certainly in less competent hands, the appearance of Art in a semi-autobiographical series—which sees Miller serving as showrunner, co-writer, and executive producer—about one of the most famous comedians on the planet might not work. But in the boldly genreless and inspiringly original <em>Bupkis</em>, a mass-murdering clown fits right in.</p> <p>In fact, the series is a decidedly accomplished “fever dream” on all fronts. After watching an early cut of the series’ inaugural season, Complex spent some time chopping it up with Miller about bringing his friend’s “relentlessly absurd” life to Peacock. Shortly after news of the Cannes unveiling, HBO shared another teaser trailer for the project, which was co-created by Abel Tesfaye with Sam Levinson (<em>Euphoria</em>) and Reza Fahim.</p> <p>In the series, which is slated to hit HBO on June 4, Abel plays a sketchy-seeming “nightclub impresario” named Tedros. Unsurprisingly, Michael Samoski’s unanimously acclaimed 2021 film Pig came in at the top of Cage’s list. “Pig, that’s my […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br /> </p> <div> <p>Thursday night gave us a delightful <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/nicolas-cage" rel="noopener">Nicolas Cage</a> takeover of <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/the-late-show" rel="noopener"><em>The Late Show</em></a>, complete with an insightful moment during which the Oscar-winning actor was asked to name what he considers <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/cinema" rel="noopener">the top five Nic Cage films</a>.</p> <p>Unsurprisingly, Michael Samoski’s unanimously acclaimed 2021 film <em>Pig</em> came in at the top of Cage’s list.</p> <p>“<em>Pig</em>, that’s my favorite movie that I’ve ever made,” Cage, who noted it’s been more than a decade since he’s been at the Ed Sullivan Theater, told <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/stephen-colbert" rel="noopener">Stephen Colbert</a>.</p> <p>From there, Cage revealed four more personal picks, in this order: <em>Mandy</em> (2018), <em>Bringing Out the Dead</em> (1999), <em>Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans</em> (2009), and <em>Joe</em> (2013). All of these are excellent and should be viewed immediately. </p> <p>When Colbert brought up <em>Face/Off</em>, Cage explained to the host and the audience how another Cage entry—1988’s <em>Vampire’s Kiss</em>—ultimately inspired his performance in John Woo’s 1997 action hit.</p> <p>“<em>Vampire’s Kiss</em> was a little movie I made where I was able to explore my more abstract dreams with film performance,” Cage said of Robert Bierman’s cult classic. “I was sadly playing a charcater who is losing his mind and was beginning to think that he was the vampire from the original <em>Nosferatu</em> movie. And when you’re playing a character who’s losing his mind, he can believe he’s Nosferatu. So I got to act like a German expressionistic silent movie star and that was cool, like these facial expressions and whatnot. But <em>Face/Off </em>was a big movie, a big studio movie that I made at Paramount, and I was able to use what I learned from this little <em>Vampire’s Kiss</em> movie and put it in this giant movie. And it worked. I was like, people really dig this. It just needs to be the right way to do it. I’m all about, like, now it’s like time is precious. I think everybody—like the past couple of years, this pandemic shit—really had people experience time in a way where they’re like, ‘Well … I should be around oranges!’ People kind of realize their time is valuable. You only get so much.”</p> <p>Elaborating further, Glover said he’s “not interested” in taking on projects simply for the money.</p> <p>“I would much rather spend time with people that I enjoy,” he said. “So it just has to be the right thing, which I think it could be. I mean, like, Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with. We’re talking about it. Last May, for example, Kennedy herself—who serves as president of Lucasfilm—said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cinemablend.com/interviews/whats-happening-with-star-wars-lando-calrissian-series-kathleen-kennedy-provides-an-update" rel="noopener">during an interview</a> with Cinema Blend that it was actually Glover who “holds all the cards” in this situation. Paltrow’s legal team, however, had argued that it was actually Sanderson who was at fault in the accident. Sanderson, <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/gwyneth-paltrow-deer-valley-ski-trial-c3555f61cf3d209e5167e916105f2aaa" rel="noopener">per a report from</a> the Associated Press, had sued Paltrow for $300,000. Meanwhile, Paltrow countersued for lawyer fees and a single dollar in damages.</p> <p>On Thursday, the jury found <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/gwyneth-paltrow-ski-trial-lawsuit-jury-f42bf61e97af2fd182017614fe6d8efd" rel="noopener">Sanderson was at fault</a> in the collision. In footage of the immediate post-verdict moments in the Utah courtroom, Paltrow is seen whispering to Sanderson as she makes her way outside.</p> <p>Footage <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/30/gwyneth-paltrow-utah-ski-crash-trial-verdict" rel="noopener">shared by</a> the <em>Guardian</em> and others shows the judge saying, “This court is now adjourned,” at which point a lawyer representing Paltrow is seen asking if his client can “slip out before” everyone else in the courtroom exits. The judge grants this request, telling everyone to remain seated as Paltrow leaves.
