So what does Metro Metro organizer Midway Group have planned for a follow-up? Last year’s headliner Lil Baby is back, along with Lil Wayne and Jack Harlow. Yeat, Coi Leray, Destroy Lonely, Nav, Metro Boomin, Murda Beatz, and more round out the lineup. There’s that, but also sometimes it’s about planning for the unexpected.

Drake’s appearance only came together in the final days leading up to the 2022 edition. Cardi nearly didn’t show after she pulled a “yesterday’s price is not today’s price.” Last year, after Young Thug was arrested weeks before his planned headlining set, the fest pivoted fast and brought 50 Cent to Montreal on a private jet.

Metro Metro organizers Olivier Primeau and Jonathan Marchitello, who also operate summer hotspot Beachclub and Latin music fest Fuego Fuego, are refreshingly candid about the chaos that inevitably swirls around a major festival. They know a rapper might get turned around at the border, so instead of dealing with it privately, they let the fans know that things may change at any time, but they’re constantly working the phones to ensure the party goes on.

This year, that includes Primeau having a business firebombed and shots fired at his home in the lead up to Metro Metro 2023. He conducted this interview with Complex Canada before the incidents, and he hasn’t spoken publicly since, only saying on Instagram that he’s taking “a step back and being less present publicly” until the situation is resolved.

On site, Metro Metro has revamped their Olympic Stadium site to deter fence jumpers—an issue last year—and give better sightlines.

Complex Canada met up with Metro Metro’s Primeau and Marchitello to talk about how Drake came together, 50 Cent’s jet, and competing with the big festivals.

What did you learn from the first two Metro Metros?
OP: The big question we’ve learned to deal with: Which artist is going to be there? That’s first. Last year, maybe two weeks before, we lost two of three headliners with Young Thug and Playboi Carti. It’s a lot of stress. You have to be sure they’re going to pass customs, which you never know.

People often thought you couldn’t have a rap festival in Canada because of the border? The first year you did it, pretty much everyone showed.
OP: In 2019, we were the first hip-hop festival of that size in Canada. Before Rolling Loud, and of course there’s OVO. We knew we were taking a risk, but I think we’ve done it right. In 2019 we started with Cardi B, just as she won the Grammy. Then last year was a super huge event for us with Drake showing up and 50 Cent instead of Young Thug. And I think we have a nice lineup this year.

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Timbaland on Jay-Z & Drake Helping Him Through Darkest Moment of Addiction

SOURCE

addiction

dfp-music

dfp-music-hiphop

drake

drugs

Featured

friendship

jay-z

Music

News

producers

recovery

shannon-sharpe

timbaland

videos

Timbaland credits Jay-Z and Drake for being voices of reason during the darkest moment of his life. From that point on, God has changed my mind, and I didn’t go to a doctor. I did it cold turkey.”

The legendary producer admitted that his addiction changed how he conducted himself in public. Jay-Z took notice, and advised him to avoid doing interviews. Drake also reached out to “check” him on his behavior, which he appreciated, saying, “those guys are special to the world.”

“Now, once they give you the information, it’s up to you to use it,” Timbaland added. “I didn’t come out until the darkness, man, and that’s why I say, it’s all love with these guys. They helped me during my darkest moment.”

About an hour into his discussion with Sharpe, Timbaland praised Jay-Z for not only helping him, but shaping their unique collaborative bond.

“Jay-Z is a prophet. … God sent him,” he proclaimed. “I’ve never seen nobody like Hov. Hov actually raised me, and he don’t even know it. He raised me in the music business. He was so prolific, so wise beyond his age, that I was just amazed at just watching him. That’s why I had a different bond with Jay when it comes to my music. It was like we were rewriting the Bible, in a way. Or rewriting history as it was gonna be.”

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Premiere: Smiley Gets Abducted by Aliens in “6ixer” Video

SOURCE

complex-ca

dfp-music

dfp-music-hiphop

drake

Featured

Music

News

ovo-sound

smiley

tier-one

toronto

videos

Smiley is off to space. Not long after Drake hopped on the rising star’s 2014 hit single “Tuesday,” Makonnen and the Toronto rapper had a falling out, resulting in the former leaving the label less than two years after signing a record deal.

In a new interview with NPR Music (above), Makonnen recalled new details about falling out with Drake, revealing that their relationship took a turn at the 2015 Wireless Festival.

“That’s when I knew something was weird,” Makonnen shared. “Drake made a little joke that I [resembled] a ‘little Eric Benét-ass looking n***a.’ I just started to feel this vibe.”

According to Makonnen, Drake’s problem with him was not related to the former’s sexuality, which became public after he signed with OVO and was rumored to be an issue between the pair. The 34-year-old said past tweets dissing Drizzy were the problem.

“Y’all need to drop him because he said your song ‘Practice’ was lame back in 2011,” Makonnen recalled one hater saying on social media. He maintains that such comments were merely a way for him to throw good-natured shade at Drake. “[It’s] our little outlet. That’s our only way of attention,” Makonnen shared. “It ain’t nothing personal.”

Later in his discussion with NPR, Makonnen admitted that his relationship with the 6 God likely reached its breaking point after he referenced their rumored beef in a Tim Westwood freestyle that saw him deliver bars over Drake beats.

“Then everybody was saying, ‘You’re going after Drake.”

Listen to ILoveMakonnen’s full interview with NPR Music up top.

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Chance the Rapper on ‘Acid Rap’ Influencing Artists Like Lil Uzi Vert

SOURCE

acid-rap

chance-the-rapper

chicago

chief-keef

cult-classic

dfp-music

dfp-music-hiphop

dfp-music-other

drake

Featured

influences

j-cole

jack-harlow

kanye-west

lil-uzi-vert

lupe-fiasco

mac-miller

Music

News

tier-one

2023 is likely to feature a ton of coverage surrounding the 10th anniversary of Chance the Rapper’s beloved mixtape Acid Rap, the milestone-commemorating revisiting of which will see key track “Juice” finally being made available on streaming. Cole [Born Sinner]. In terms of rap, like, there was not another album that had a song like ‘Chain Smoker’ on it or another album that had a song like ‘Everybody’s Something’ on it. It was its own thing.”

Elsewhere in his chat with Complex, Chance detailed how he sees the tape’s sustaining influence, both on the “midwest sound” and beyond.

“I think it’s the blueprint for that midwest sound that you still hear to this day,” Chance said. “I think you’d be hard-pressed to find somebody that’s a year or two younger than me that wasn’t influenced by Acid Rap, even if they weren’t from the midwest. Jack Harlow, [Lil] Uzi Vert. People that are from opposite coasts and from other places still tell me, like, what the album meant to them at that time.”

But for those actually in Chicago at the time of the tape’s creation and rise to adoration, Chance pointed out, the experience was even more influential. Acid Rap, he said, served multiple purposes for artists at that time—it helped define a lane for those taking an alternative path, it solidified an “ecosystem” that was already in place, and it was part of something new in terms of what Chicago was known for in music.

Key to this era too was Chief Keef, who Chance shouted out as another Chicago artist who was redefining the sound at that time.

“Kanye West was still the biggest artist, Lupe was still charting. It was still an older generation of music that didn’t sound anything like Acid Rap or like drill music,” Chance said of the importance of those breakthrough years, specifically for what he and Keef were doing. “So I feel like me and Keef came out around the same time, both doing our own thing. That’s why we got so much coverage and so much support was because it was different than what you thought would be the typical Chicago sound.”

As fans are already well aware, the Acid Rap festivities are indeed extensive and most notably include a special hometown show in Chicago this August. See here for all the details.

Source link

قالب وردپرس
