Together with Quavo, the three were known as the popular Atlanta rap trio Migos. News broke on November 1 that Takeoff was killed at a bowling alley in Houston. At the time, the group had been disbanded, but the fact that the three were related seemed to bring about a truce in light of Takeoff’s passing between Quavo and Offset.

There was a tribute during the 2023 Grammy Awards, led by Quavo, in which the artist gave a stirring and emotional tribute to Takeoff. During the performance, Quavo held Takeoff’s chain and held it to the sky as the audience cheered.

Takeoff was 28.
The feature, captured by Elliot and Erick Jiménez, marks the publication’s first-ever all-Spanish cover.

In the accompanying interview, Bad Bunny reflected on his years-long run of global hits and equally global recognition. He also touched on more tabloid-y matters, as well as a recent controversy spurred by the live captioning that appeared during his unforgettably brilliant ceremony-opening performance at the 2023 Grammys.

As viewers will recall, subtitles were displayed during the performance that read “singing in non-english” and “speaking in non-english.” This move was widely criticized by fans and fellow artists alike, with 50 Cent among those who were quick to slam the handling of Bunny’s performance.

“In reality when I saw it…it didn’t capture the message. It didn’t say ‘in Spanish’… como que (like) ‘non-english’… well, the system doesn’t work,” Bunny said when asked about the incident, per Andrew R. Chow and Mariah Espada. “It was porqueria (crap), that’s the only way I could put it.”

As for the performance itself, Bad Bunny revealed that he actually didn’t know he was going to open the ceremony in February until the last second. By his estimation, the show’s producers saw a version of his performance and thought “let’s put him as the first act.”

The new Time cover is not the first instance of Bad Bunny having made history. In fact, it’s far from it. His 2020 album El Último Tour Del Mundo, for example, became the first all-Spanish album to hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart upon its release in 2020.

Next up for Bad Bunny on his continued journey as quite inarguably the biggest artist on the planet is a pair of headlining sets as part of this year’s Coachella lineup. Frank Ocean and Blackpink are also headlining.

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Diplo Addresses Speculation He Threw Shade at Beyoncé During Grammys

SOURCE

awards

beyonce

dfp-music

dfp-music-other

diplo

DJ

Featured

grammys

Music

News

producer

tier-one

Earlier this month, Beyoncé’s latest album, Renaissance, won Best Dance/Electronic Music Album at the 2023 Grammy Awards. As the pop star took the stage to accept the award, cameras captured Diplo yelling a few words to a person seated next to him. Some internet lip readers believed the producer said something to the effect of, “They bought that.”

However, Diplo has denied throwing any shade at Beyoncé. The producer, who previously clarified that what he actually said was, “I’m glad to be part of this,” recently DM’d Instagram account Hollywood Unlocked to further explain why he was not dissing Bey.

“You know I didn’t say that lol,” Diplo said regarding the aforementioned rumor, before sharing an official statement that sheds light on his respect for Beyoncé.

“Beyoncé[’s] album was legendary (I’m a Beyoncé stan. Remember I produced some classic dance songs for her, like ’Til the End of Time’ and ‘Girls Run the World’),” he said in an official statement to Hollywood Unlocked. “What’s important to understand was that her intention was 100 percent. She did the work, found the real producers, and she made classics. So, she deserves her flowers, and when she won, I was just proud to see my nomination on the screen in the huge arena.”

“Dance music has and will be the most Inclusive music of our generation,” Diplo added. “Our community has always been gay / straight, but icy , poor.. white black brown purple .. it’s the music that had united the world during my lifetime and i’m glad to just be one part of it.”

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Spike Lee Calls Out Grammys for Not Awarding Beyoncé Album of the Year

SOURCE

album-of-the-year

beyonce

dfp-entertainment

dfp-entertainment-movies

dfp-music

dfp-music-other

Featured

grammys

Music

News

spike-lee

tier-one

Spike Lee has spoken out against the Grammys and criticized them for once again not awarding Beyoncé Album of the Year despite her history-making wins at the 65th annual awards this year. I know she’s won multiple Grammys, but four times nominated for album of the year and she’s lost every time? No disrespect to those artists like Adele or Harry Styles who won. It’s not their fault, but that’s some straight-up bullshit.”

After winning four Grammys at the 2023 awards, Beyoncé made history as the most awarded artist in the award show’s 65-year history. However, she’s never taken home album of the year despite having been nominated numerous times. Her seminal sixth album Lemonade lost out to Adele’s 25, and her 2010 project I Am…Sasha Fierce was beaten out by Taylor Swift’s Fearless. At this year’s awards, Harry Styles took home Album Of The Year for Harry’s House.

“There’s a history of great Black artists who come up for these awards and don’t win,” Lee added. “We all know their work is great because art speaks for itself. But then it always comes down to this tricky territory of validation. Do Black artists say: ‘Fuck it’ – or seek white validation and chase awards? I just want to give a shoutout to my sister Beyoncé. We know what the deal is. It’s straight-up shenanigans, skulduggery, subterfuge. Or as the British say: it’s some poppycock!”

Beyoncé had tied Georg Solti’s record 31 wins after winning Best R&B Song for her Renaissance track “CUFF IT,” but she was soon declared victorious in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, which brought her career wins total to 32.

“I’m trying not to be too emotional and I’m trying to just receive this night,” she said when taking the stage to accept the latter award, adding at the end, “I’d like to thank the queer community for your love and for inventing this genre.”

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Robert Glasper T-Shirt Inspired by Chris Brown’s Grammys Remarks Sells Out

SOURCE

award-shows

charity

chris-brown

dfp-entertainment

dfp-entertainment-tv

dfp-music

dfp-music-other

Featured

grammys

Music

News

robert-glasper

t-shirts

tier-one

Robert Glasper’s well-played response to Chris Brown’s attempted questioning of his Grammys victory has resulted in a sold-out t-shirt design. Glasper, of course, took home the award that evening for his acclaimed 2022 album Black Radio III. Brown, meanwhile, was up for the same award with his Breezy (Deluxe) album.

Brown later apologized and shared a screenshot of a message he sent to Glasper. In it, he congratulated Glasper while also redirecting his prior criticism toward the Recording Academy.

On Monday, Glasper alerted fans to the fact that the resulting t-shirt had sold out.

“Thanks for the support,” he said in an IG update. “A portion of the proceeds from this shirt will be donated to the Community Music Center of New Orleans. A nonprofit created to share the music culture and music education in New Orleans, providing free music lessons to underserved youth. I can’t thank y’all enough for supporting this cause.”

Before Brown’s original comments and prior to winning Best R&B Album at this year’s Grammys, Glasper shared a separate post to IG (dated Jan. 30) in which he had a little fun with the “Who the fuck is” phrase. The shirt itself, however, was launched after Brown’s widely reported comments.

This July, Glasper will take the stage as the artist in residence at the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa Valley. As Barnes revealed not long after the alleged incident happened, and has reiterated numerous times throughout the years, Dre assaulted her at a record release party in Hollywood in January 1991 after she hosted an episode of Pump It Up! that focused on the tension between Dre’s group N.W.A. and Ice Cube, who left the group in 1989.

“Everybody wants to separate the art from the artist, and sometimes that’s just not possible. Most people without a knowledge of [Dr. Dre’s] history are going to say, ‘Oh, he must deserve that. He must be such a great person for them to put an award in his name.’ But they named this award after an abuser,” she told the magazine. “It wasn’t just a one or two-time thing; these are choices. The first time, it’s maybe a mistake. The second time, okay. The third time, it’s a choice. I’m not saying he is the same person now, though. I don’t know. I’m not around him anymore. I haven’t talked to him. But to name an award after someone with that type of history in the music industry, you might as well call it the ‘Ike Turner Award.'”

Barnes described the Grammys’ hip-hop tribute as “beautiful,” but lamented how she couldn’t be in the same space as Dre. “He said it himself in the documentary The Defiant Ones: I’m a ‘blemish’ on who he is as a man. Well, what do you do with a blemish? There’s a whole industry created—skincare lines and vitamins and rituals—to get rid of blemishes,” she continued. “And, in a sense, there’s a whole network to keep me hidden.”

Despite her place in hip-hop culture as a prominent journalist at the forefront of hip-hop’s boom in the early ‘90s, Barnes has been unable to remain an active participant in its culture. “I shouldn’t have to suffer by not being able to exist in a space and in a culture that not only did I grow up in but that I contributed to in a major way,” she said. “Is this about his feelings? Is this about his legacy? Or is it about ego and toxic masculinity? What is it about? My whole history has been erased—as an artist, as a music journalist, and as a television host.”

It’s not just the Grammys that haven’t supported or heard her, though, as Barnes stressed that the hip-hop community has failed to support her. “When I think of what atonement looks like for Dre and me, I think of a missed opportunity where we could have sat down together on camera and hashed it out. I think that would’ve begun a journey of healing; he’s coming face to face with me, and I’m coming face to face with him,” she said. “I’ve put out the olive branch. Black women and grace, you know how we are. It wasn’t accepted.”

Barnes concluded by stating that she’s been able to get herself out of homelessness after being unhoused for three years, but it hasn’t been easy. “I’m finally getting my feet wet again, back in the game as a journalist,” she said. “I’m a little rusty, but it’s getting better. The more I do it, the better I’ll feel—confident again.”

In her description of the encounter with Dre in 1991, Barnes said that he dragged her by her hair and smashed her face into a wall. He allegedly kicked her while she was on the ground, and stomped on her fingers. In a statement shared with the New York Times in 2015, Dre apologized but did not directly name Barnes.

Read the full Rolling Stone piece here.

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Beyoncé Looks Back on Historic Grammys Night in New Video

SOURCE

award-shows

awards

beyonce

dfp-entertainment

dfp-entertainment-tv

dfp-music

dfp-music-hiphop

dfp-music-other

dfp-music-pop

Featured

grammys

history

instagram

Music

News

tier-one

videos

Beyoncé is reflecting on a massively historic Grammys night in her latest social media update. O wins,” Snoop wrote in the caption alongside a trio of emoji.

A number of fans and fellow artists subsequently hopped into the comments to express their disbelief, including Jamie Foxx.

“You deserve that [and] more my G!” Foxx said.

Image via Snoop Dogg on Instagram

<img decoding="async" class="article__rte-img" src="//www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 135 76"%3E%3C/svg%3E" alt="Jamie Foxx comments on Snoop Instagram post" loading="lazy" height="480" width="640" />

Image via Snoop Dogg on Instagram

To be clear, the Recording Academy says that Snoop has received 16 nominations throughout his prolific run of releases. The most recent of these nominations was for Snoop’s involvement in Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. At this Sunday’s ceremony, Kendrick took home the Best Rap Album award for his latest release, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.

This isn’t the first time Snoop has pointed out his lack of Grammys. Just last year, for example, he shared an IG update in which he blithely told that year’s nominees to “have fun” at the ceremony while noting his numerous winless nominations.

Ahead of this year’s broadcast, Snoop performed as part of the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective event in honor of Dr. Dre. Who are you trying to not impress? Was this the guy that lives with you?
