That wasn’t the case for the Detroit Pistons who put up only 17 wins this year, had a 14 percent chance of winning the lottery, and ended up with the fifth pick. The first blow to the team was when Cade Cunningham injured his shin twelve games into the new season and was out for the year. Up to that point, the two-year point guard was improving from his rookie year, averaging 19.9 points and six assists. But his loss affected the team, and they were putrid all year. Season lowlights included two (count them, two) 11-game losing streaks, the third worst in the league, ranking last in field goal percentage, next to last in field goals made, 28<sup>th</sup> in both offensive and defensive rating, 29<sup>th</sup> in points scored (110.3), 25<sup>th</sup> in turnovers (15.1), 27<sup>th</sup> in assists, and 29<sup>th</sup> in plus-minus. Such a poor showing on the court forced coach Dwane Casey to step down, and it doesn’t look like anyone is clamoring for the position at the moment. Last month, we ranked<a href="https://www.complex.com/sports/a/seanm/5-best-nba-guards" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> the best guards in the NBA</a>, and now we focus on the league’s best centers. Considering the game is<a href="https://www.nba.com/news/nba-commissioner-adam-silver-discusses-leagues-positionless-basketball-at-annual-finals-press-conference" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> evolving into positionless basketball</a>, it was a little tougher to nail this one down. Sometimes centers play the four, and sometimes forwards play the five. Hell, you might have an instance where<a href="https://theathletic.com/3203985/2022/03/23/how-bruce-brown-changed-his-game-and-with-it-the-nets-recent-success/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> a 6-4 guard plays as a small-ball center</a>. So, there might be some additions and omissions on this list that would have you question the method to the madness. For example, even though Anthony Davis was, rightfully, slotted in as a center during the Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff run,<a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/news/why-anthony-davis-doesnt-like-playing-center-lakers/yddmq6bpgmsm1svvm2phxss5" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> he’s on record considering himself a power forward</a>, never liking to play the middle, to begin with. Defensive Player of the Year, the Memphis Grizzlies’ Jaren Jackson, Jr. would assuredly be placed on this list, but he logged in more minutes at the four (1,760) than he did as a center (27). Back in March, Morant was suspended for eight games without pay after the Grizzlies superstar brandished a weapon in an […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br /> </p> <div> <p>Days after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/tag/ja_morant" rel="noopener">Ja Morant</a> was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/sports/a/brad-callas/ja-morant-appears-to-flash-gun-another-instagram-live-video" rel="noopener">suspended</a> by the Memphis Grizzlies after he was seen flashing a gun on social media last weekend, some strippers from the club where the All-Star guard first landed himself in hot water are speaking out.</p> <p>Back in March, Morant was suspended for eight games without pay after the Grizzlies superstar brandished a weapon in an Instagram Live session he posted while at a Denver strip club.</p> <p>While speaking with the <a target="_blank" href="https://nypost.com/2023/05/20/strippers-say-ja-morant-didnt-apologize-for-march-gun-show/" rel="noopener"><em>New York Post</em></a>, one stripper from the club said she doesn’t believe Morant has learned from his mistakes.</p> <p>“I don’t foresee an apology [anytime] soon,” the woman said. “He’s a boy.” </p> <p>Another dancer ripped Morant for “clearly begging for attention,” adding that he should “be banned from all clubs and get his NBA career taken away given our country’s current circumstances on gun violence.”</p> <p>Earlier this week, Morant responded to his latest suspension in a statement provided to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.</p> <p>“I know I’ve disappointed a lot of people who have supported me,” he said. “This is a journey and I recognize there is more work to do. My words may not mean much right now, but I take full accountability for my actions. I’m committed to continuing to work on myself.”</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>While the Grizzlies organization has already suspended Morant “from all team activities pending league review,” the NBA has yet to deliver a ruling on the matter. During ESPN’s coverage of the NBA Draft Lottery this past Tuesday, commissioner Adam Silver appeared alongside Malika Andrews to share his thoughts on Morant’s latest actions.</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>“Honestly, I was shocked when I saw this weekend that video,” Silver shared at the 1:45 mark below. “Now, we’re in the process of investigating it, and we’ll figure out exactly what happened to the best we can. A year after winning the NBA Finals and capturing his first Finals MVP award, Steph Curry finds himself amongst the best of the best still even though he is 35 years old. The same goes for LeBron James, who in his 20th season still leading his team on deep playoff runs while claiming the title as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.</p> <p>From Damian Lillard to Jimmy Butler, this is a list dedicated to acknowledging that some things truly do get better with time. These are the best NBA players in the NBA over the age of 30-years-old. I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”</p> <p>Days later, Morant sat down with ESPN’s Jalen Rose to <a href="https://www.complex.com/sports/a/jose-martinez/ja-morant-speaks-about-gun-incident-wasnt-his-new-interview" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discuss</a> his actions. </p> <p>“It’s not who I am. The Warriors now enter Friday’s Game 6 in Los Angeles looking to force a Game 7 back in San Francisco on Sunday. </p> <p>When asked if the Lakers are one of the toughest opponents the Warriors dynasty has faced, Looney didn’t shy away from praising LeBron, Anthony Davis, and the rest of the duo’s supporting cast.</p> <p>“You could say that,” said Looney. “They got us on the ropes, so I’ll give ‘em the credit. They’ll probably be one of the tougher matchups we had in the last few years. You know, having LeBron & AD is always gonna be a tall task and they’re well coached. They’re really physical and they got D’Lo, Schroder, who are real crafty and able to get buckets so I definitely say this is one of the hardest series and you know, just from the adjustments from game to game and dealing with those two guys who are, you know, some of the best ever at their positions and in the league. So it’s definitely been one of the tougher series.”</p> <p>The Warriors center added, “But you know, we still feel like we got a chance, we still feel like we should have won a few of those games but we didn’t. So we gotta go out there and try to now figure it out and try to get one one on the road in Game 6. But I definitely give the credit. It’s them definitely one of the toughest series.”</p> <p>Since Golden State’s dynasty began in 2015, the Warriors are 7-2 in elimination games.</p> <p>This year’s playoffs is not the first time the Steph, Klay, Draymond, and Looeny nucleus have faced adversity. Back in 2016, the Warriors were down 3-1 against the Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook led Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. According to Looney, the Warriors are leaning on that experience to remain confident while facing another 3-1 hole.</p> <p>“It’s not our first experience, but it is definitely a new experience,” Looney told Complex. “Like I said, my rookie year, we were down 3-1 vs. OKC in the conference finals before we came back and won and went to the finals. So them guys have a lot of experience, but it’s always a new experience cause the characters change and no, we got this, the main three or four people, but we still got a whole lot of new faces in. So it’s definitely a different experience to be in this position. The last year we went to the finals, we didn’t really ever have this type of adversity when we were down. I think it was 2-1 in the finals but we never was down 3-1. And we know how hard it’s to come back from that, but we feel like we got the guys to do it. We got a lot of experience and we got a lot of championship pedigree. So we’ve been leaning on that and you know, we got to take it one game at a time, but we feel like we’re capable of doing it.”</p> <p>With a chance to eliminate the Warriors in Game 6, the Lakers are just the fifth team that’s pushed Golden State to the brink of elimination.
