It hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and has spent 97 total weeks on the chart, currently sitting at No. 85. 2019’s <em>Hot Pink</em> peaked at No. 9 and spent 155 weeks on the albums chart. The 32-year-old rejected that notion and played both as proof.</p> <p>“It helps his argument, obviously,” Sheeran said. “It works very, very, well for him, but it’s not the truth.”</p> <p>The singer took the stand to share the backstory of how he wrote “Thinking Out Loud” with Alex Wadge in February 2014 at Sheeran’s home in the UK. At some point during their session, Ed went to take a shower and came out to hear Wadge playing a set of chords. Sheeran’s immediate thought was, “We need to do something with that.” They finished the single later that night, inspired by the marriages of relatives who had recently fallen ill or died.</p> <p>“Thinking Out Loud” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spent 21 weeks on the chart overall.</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>Sheeran testified earlier last week as well, where he said the melody was “probably” his idea, and that he “would’ve been an idiot to stand onstage in front of 20,000 people” if he had copied “Let’s Get It On.”</p> <p>The lawsuit was filed by the heirs of Ed Townsend—the singer and producer behind Gaye’s song—for copyright infringement. The Townsend estate includes his daughter Kathryn Townsend Griffin, sister Helen McDonald, and the estate of his former wife Cherrigale Townsend. They are reportedly seeking $100 million in damages. Her former boyfriend Rick Salomon released the video, which was mostly shot in night vision, without Hilton’s consent in 2004 as <em>1 Night in Pari</em><em>s</em>. The deal would cover his full discography, which spans six albums and a number of one-off singles and collaborations.</p> <p>The same company purchased catalog rights to Justin Timberlake’s discography earlier this year for $100 million. As reported by <a href="https://variety.com/2022/music/news/leonard-cohen-hipgnosis-1235196842/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Variety</em></a>, Hipgnosis also bought the song catalog of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen in March, although the details of the acquisition were not made public. The purchase was made through the Blackstone-backed Hipgnosis Songs Capital ICAV fund, which launched in 2021 with an initial investment of approximately $1 billion.</p> <p>Bieber is considerably younger than the majority of artists who sell their music catalog. </p> <p>Earlier this week, <a href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/justin-bieber-denounces-hm-collection" target="_self" rel="noopener">Bieber denounced</a> a new collection of H&M clothing that features his face. “I didn’t approve any of the merch collection that they put up at H&M,” he wrote in a now-expired Instagram Stories post. “All without my permission and approval. SMH I wouldn’t buy it if I were you.”</p> <p>He described the seemingly unauthorized merch as “trash” and encouraged his fans to avoid purchasing any of it. According to the fashion retailer, the collection was officially licensed and the merch went through the usual “approval procedures” before making it onto store shelves.
