Moula 1st continues to punch out an arsenal of bangers with his explosive new album, Michael. Split into two different discs, the new album’s 17 tracks reaffirm the fiery consistency Moula 1st commits himself to with both his music and demeanor.

The Rexdale rapper’s new album watches him shapeshift his brash persona across five famous Mikes—Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Mike Tyson, Michael Phelps and Mike Myers—placing himself as one of the greats and going toe-to-toe with anyone who doubts his skill.

The album’s first track, “Olympic Mike,” was released back in April and solidly signifies the infectious bravado Moula 1st naturally emits throughout this album. “Back to back, 16 months/Look what I done/Olympic Mike, this just for fun/66 points, looks like I won,” he raps on the track, his flow commanding the hazy production with every verse.

The back-to-back hustle Moula 1st is referring to is probably the 31 music videos he’s released this year alone, along with the three albums (Magneto, Pandemic Rex and Revenge) that he released last year. Accompanied with the release of Michael, Moula 1st is stacked with lyrical and creative ammunition to fire himself further into the upper tiers of Toronto’s rap scene.

Stream Michael below.

On Thursday, the Drake-founded imprint and Canadian basketball team unveiled a co-branded collection made in partnership with Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, featuring elements of the famed 1993 film, Jurassic Park. The fall/winter 2021 capsule centers on a limited-edition, hand-crafted leather varsity jacket created by Jeff Hamilton, known for his iconic NBA championship jackets. The joint features the OVO, Raptors, and Jurassic Park logos, as well as a red-and-black Toronto skyline and the city’s ‘416’ area code on the collar.

OVO also released the campaign video for the collection, starring Raptors rookie and Rexdale legend Dalano Banton. In the clip, the Canadian point guard rocks the hoodie from the capsule, which dons the OVO owl with Raptor claws digging into it.

The new collection also includes T-shirts, a long-sleeve tee, a crewneck, and sweatpants.

Over the summer, Drake invited Banton, along with fellow rookie Scottie Barnes, to his house in order to give them a proper welcome to the Raptors.

“He talked to us about longevity,” Banton told us of Drake’s advice to them. “You know, live in the moment, obviously, soak it up and be grateful for what you’ve accomplished, but also kinda worry about longevity and continuing to grind. He’s a guy that’s never satisfied regardless of how many hit songs he drops, so he was just preaching about never being satisfied. And said if I ever need anything, to hit him up.”

He added: “Meeting people from Toronto who’ve reached the top of the top, it’s just great for me, for them, and the whole city. People need [examples of] guys that are doing what’s right for themselves. He’s rapping and I’m playing basketball. I feel like just being able to show for Toronto, just us taking a picture together, it goes a long way for other kids. They’re from Toronto, so it feels like they can do it too.”

The OVO x Toronto Raptors x Jurassic Park collection will be available Friday worldwide at OVO stores, as well as online at OVO’s official website and the Real Sports store.

On any given tunnel walk, you’re bound to find the Toronto Raptors’ homegrown rookie Dalano Banton rocking some drippy clothes with the words “In Your City” on them. That’s the name of a streetwear brand the Rexdale native and his childhood friends launched together a few years ago. It’s also something of a life philosophy they all live by.

“I just always dreamed bigger, so I used to see myself being all around the world,” Banton said of the motto when we chatted with him earlier this year. “It was something that me and my friends came up with: we started out here, but now we’re in your city. It’s about living bigger than your circumstances.”

His homies and In Your City collaborators—CEO Tommy Cash and co-founders Ck and CBO—are immensely proud of the Raptors’ 46th draft pick, who’s already cracked the team’s rotation with his explosive energy and intuitive passing. This week, they dropped Banton’s very own capsule, The Dubber Don Collection. The limited-edition release consists of two-tone hoodie tracksuits and T-shirts with textured prints, some featuring the Raptors’ classic red, white, and purple colourway.

Besides being his Instagram handle, Dubber Don is what Banton’s friends have been calling him for years.

“In high school, Dalano would always drop 20 points, all the time,” says Tommy, In Your City’s CEO. “Twenty points a game. He would pass and rotate the ball for sure, but every game he’d tell us, ‘Another dub, another dub.’ So eventually he was like, ‘You know what? Just call me the Dubber Don, because I’m the Don of all the dubs.’ From there, we just ran with it.”

“That’s one thing about Dalano: he’ll go the extra mile to make sure you’re good and he’s not shining by himself.”

Tommy and Dalano go way back. Before they were even born, their families migrated from Jamaica together, both landing in the same part of Rexdale—the neighbourhood in the northwest of Toronto—near Kipling Avenue and Mount Olive Drive. From an early age, they aspired to transcend the circumstances of their low-income neighbourhood.

“We were just trying to show that we’re bigger than where we come from,” says Tommy. “We were running with a saying, ‘In your city,’ like wherever you are, just make yourself known. It’s usually like, if you’re from Rexdale or an area like it in Toronto, you’re stuck in that area. So we’re just trying to show that we’re more than that. We’re growing bigger than that. We’re everywhere: Vancouver, Miami, Atlanta, we’re going to the islands. It became a lifestyle that we’re living.”

Tommy Cash in a black Surburban wearing the Dubber Don tracksuit/Image via In Your City

Eventually, they began to notice the phrase catching on in their community. They’d see the hashtag pop up on Instagram, used by people any time they’d leave the GTA, even if it was just to neighbouring Barrie or London. Tommy decided to start making apparel with the saying plastered on it. Once Banton’s basketball career began to lift off, taking him to prep schools in Massachusetts and college teams in Kentucky and Nebraska, he’d wear In Your City threads to games.

Just as Banton wants to bring Rexdale along with him on his NBA ascent—wearing the number 45 as a nod to the Kipling bus route—he’s been more than happy to push the brand every chance he gets. “He shows it on the court: he’s willing to help people out before he even helps himself,” says Tommy. “That’s one thing about Dalano: he’ll go the extra mile to make sure you’re good and he’s not shining by himself. He’s a leader.”

Dalano Banton rocking the Dubber Don hoodie in the tunnel/Image via Toronto Raptors

Tommy can’t say he was entirely surprised when Banton’s name was called at the NBA draft this summer. They had been visualizing the moment together since they were young. “It’s something that we manifested,” he says. “It’s all something that we planned and we sat down and said, ‘This is what’s going to happen.’ And it just kept happening and happening…. I’ve seen him rise from starting out playing at Jane and Finch tournaments here, playing at a local community centers, to traveling and getting prep school offers. When we saw that, we’re like, ‘Yeah, you’re going to make it. You just gotta stay focused. I know you’re thinking about coming to chill with us, but just focus on basketball because it’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than where we come from.’”

CBO in In Your City’s Charcoal Raptors edition tracksuit/Image via In Your City

Now, with In Your City, they hope to inspire other youth to dream bigger than their surroundings too. Banton consults regularly with Tommy, Ck, and CBO—via in group chats, FaceTimes, and in-person meetings when he’s home—on the direction of the brand. He’ll give his input on collections, criticize things he doesn’t like, and help strategize on drops. For the Dubber Don line, they did a photo shoot at the North Kipling Community Centre, where Banton grew up playing basketball.

Tommy says the goal is to make In Your City “a luxurious streetwear brand” that feels like a way of life. Each drop comes in extremely limited batches—fewer than 100 per item—with no restocks. “There’ll be a lot of brands in the city that sell merch that’s just printing on clothing. We’re getting our stuff done overseas from all over, like Pakistan, India, China, and some U.S. suppliers, just to get the quality high and keep everyone exclusive in what they’re wearing. We want people to feel like they’re not just wearing a clothing brand, they’re wearing something that’s like a lifestyle. When you’re wearing it, you stand out.”

Ck in the grey Dubber Don pullover hoodie tracksuit/Image via In Your City

Banton is keen on giving his friends and teammates an assist whenever he can, and in that same spirit, In Your City aims to help other aspiring designers in Toronto thrive as well. They plan to launch a consulting program to aid young streetwear entrepreneurs in jumpstarting their businesses at a faster pace. “We now have the knowledge it takes to bypass the early stages in the clothing industry, so helping startup brands is something we’re looking into,” says Tommy.

You can expect more In Your City collections in the months to come, as well as some collaborations with high-profile influencers in Toronto and even the U.S. Like the brand’s name suggests, they intend to take this thing global. Still, while their ethos is about thinking beyond your immediate environs, the crew couldn’t be more grateful to have Dalano playing for the 6ix, right back where he started.

“When he got drafted, it was crazy. But for him to come to Toronto was the shocking part,” says Tommy. “He hasn’t really been home in three or four years. So, him coming to the Raptors is him finally coming back to his city and actually getting to stay. By God’s grace, he came home.”

“Drake’s house is huge.”

Banton still can’t believe he knows what the inside of the 6ix God’s mansion looks like. Shortly after draft night, he and Barnes received an exclusive invitation from the Toronto rapper and Raptors global ambassador, who wanted to give the players a proper welcome to the team. It’s a long way from Mount Olive to the Bridle Path.

“He talked to us about longevity,” he says of Drake’s advice to them.

Banton’s NBA career officially starts at Wednesday’s season opener in Toronto, but regardless of how things progress from there, his legacy might already be set in stone. He’s the kid who clawed his way out of the Rex, put it on the map, made success seem tangible for kids across the city. Started from the bottom, now he’s got The Boy on speed dial.

What’s more, he may well be the most fully actualized Toronto man the Raptors have ever seen.

“Shriv, Mo Band$, Lil Bucky, Biig Slime, Northside Benji, Burna Bandz,” Banton says, rattling off the underground rappers from the city he listens to regularly. “I bump pretty much everyone from Toronto. A lot of people from America don’t understand our music, but I like it.” He believes the 6ix’s MCs get lost in translation with U.S. audiences. “People just think Canada’s so nice and this and that, so I feel like they’re not really understanding our culture, you know? And probably our accent—the way we talk and the words that people here use, they don’t really understand. It’s crazy, though, I feel like Toronto rap is blowing up, and it’s going to continue to get bigger.”

He’s fluent in Toronto slang and makes a point of teaching it to his teammates—though Barnes is more advanced in it than he realized. “I’ve been teaching him some words, but he knows a lot! I was like, ‘Whoa, who taught you that?’” says Banton. Of course, he isn’t ignorant to the origins of the dialect. “Scottie is Jamaican too, and we use a lot of cultural slang like ‘wa gwan’ and stuff like that. It’s not really just a Toronto thing. You know, Toronto soaks up all cultures easily, regardless of what ethnicity you are. We have Jamaican culture in the way we talk, so it’s easy for him to understand.”

I once asked Ujiri about the importance of people seeing their own kind succeed at things. The question was related to the Giants of Africa basketball camps the Raptors exec runs in his home continent every summer, but his answer could easily apply to youth anywhere in the world: “Kids have to see it. It has an impact. We have to be role models. They need to see someone and say, ‘He’s from here. He’s from our place. If he can do it, maybe we can try to do it.’ It’s huge.”

Banton is the hero Toronto’s inner-city kids need right now—someone who looks like them, talks like them, and bumps the same tracks as them, doing the impossible. After all, you can’t be what you can’t see. And the rookie’s ready to show us something.

“I want to be the blueprint of somebody who really made it out, made something of themselves, and took it to another level, not somebody who ‘could have been.’ I’m trying to change the narrative,” he says. “Just having that chip on my shoulder, being from somewhere where people don’t really come out of, I have to take it with me and put it on, so that everybody from there can follow in my footsteps. I want to continue to build not just Rexdale, but Toronto as a whole. I feel like I represent the whole city. I’m big on taking where I’m from with pride. I accept who I am and I love where I come from.”
