Though he was transferred to the general population in 2022, Hope said his time in the cell took a major toll on his health. The inmate claimed he has suffered from anxiety, depression, hallucinations and suicidal thoughts.

Hope argued that his years in solitary confinement amounted to “cruel and unusual punishment,” which is banned under the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. A Texas federal judge dismissed the suit in 2020, ruling the inmate’s allegations did not “rise to the level of a violation of the Eighth Amendment.” The New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals supported the decision in 2021, which prompted Hope to file an appeal with the Supreme Court last year.

SCOTUS, which has considerable discretion in deciding which cases it’ll hear, has not explained why he chose to reject Hope’s appeal.

“The idea of putting prisoners in solitary confinement for decades on end would have been anathema to the Founders, and we believe that the Supreme Court must someday take up a case to make that clear,” said Hope’s attorney, Easha Anand.

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Supreme Court Will Not Block $6 Billion Student Loan Debt Settlement

SOURCE

college

court

debt

dfp-politics

dfp-politics-social

education

Featured

law

money

Music

News

student-loans

supreme-court

The Supreme Court has declined to block a $6 billion student loan debt settlement involving for-profit schools and vocational institutions accused of misconduct. We all deserve to be safe and it’s every person’s right to make decisions about their own bodies. As an artist, I want to use my platform to let these politicians know: My body is for no one to control, but me.”

Caren Spruch, the national director of Arts & Entertainment Engagement at Planned Parenthood Federation of America added, “We’ve been privileged to have the support of many wonderful musical artists who are speaking out about the attacks on abortion.”

Spruch continued, “When a prominent artist like Latto uses their platform to amplify the need for reproductive rights for all, it’s a very powerful moment. About 59 percent of voters rejected a proposed amendment that would’ve reversed a 2019 Kansas Supreme Court ruling that determined Kansans have the right to terminate a pregnancy. The new vote marks the first abortion referendum in the United States since the overturning of Roe v. Wade back in June.

“Voters in Kansas turned out in record numbers to reject extreme efforts to amend the state constitution to take away a woman’s right to choose and open the door for a state-wide ban,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “This vote makes clear what we know: the majority of Americans agree that women should have access to abortion and should have the right to make their own health care decisions. Congress should listen to the will of the American people and restore the protections of Roe as federal law.”

Kansas law permits abortions up until 22 weeks of pregnancy.

The vote to uphold abortion access came as a surprise to many, as Kansas is a deeply red state with a GOP-controlled legislature. However, a Pew Research Center survey published in July showed the majority of Americans are opposed to outright abortion bans, while 62 percent disapproved of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The SCOTUS ruling gave U.S. states license to outlaw abortion, effectively squashing a decades-old precedent that granted the federal right to the procedure. Experts believe the Kansas vote indicates abortion will be a winning issue for Democrats in the upcoming primaries, which Republicans are expected to dominate.

“Kansans stood up for fundamental rights today,” Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly tweeted. “We rejected divisive legislation that jeopardized our economic future & put women’s health care access at risk. Together, we’ll continue to make incredible strides to make KS the best state in the nation to live freely & do business.”

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Jim Harbaugh Will Raise Baby If Michigan Players Have Unplanned Pregnancy

SOURCE

abortion

babies

coach

college-football

dfp-sports

dfp-sports-other

Featured

football

human-rights

jim-harbaugh

michigan

michigan-wolverines

Music

ncaa-football

News

Pregnancies

roe-v-wade

supreme-court

tier-one

Wolverines football coach Jim Harbaugh reiterated his stance on abortion rights last week during an anti-choice fundraising event that took place in Plymouth, Michigan. “I believe in having the courage to let the unborn be born,” Harbaugh said at the Plymouth Right to Life event, per ESPN. “I love life. Let that unborn child be born, and if at that time, you don’t feel like you can care for it, you don’t have the means or the wherewithal, then Sarah and I will take that baby.”

Harbaugh added, “Any player on our team, any female staff member or any staff member or anybody in our family or our extended family…that doesn’t feel like after they have a baby they can take care of it, we got a big house. We’ll raise that baby.”

The Michigan coach went on to say he respects different viewpoints when it comes to abortion rights but that abortion is a direly serious subject.

“It’s a life-or-death type of issue,” he shared. “And I believe in, and I respect, people’s views. But let’s hear them. Let’s discuss them because there’s passion on both sides of this issue. But I’m also equally as heartbroken over what happened in America yesterday. The Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade, which is a law that ensures a woman’s right to a safe abortion and other basic human rights. And I’m devastated and terrified and so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this.”

Rodrigo also named the justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and Brett Kavanaugh before she and Lily performed together.

“I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that—at the end of the day—they don’t give a shit about freedom,” Rodrigo said.

See the full Glastonbury 2022 performance of “Fuck You” below. Wade in a statement shared to social media on Friday. Per Obama, the Supreme Court had “not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent” but also “relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues.”

When responding to Obama’s statement on Twitter, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said “Now do Plessy vs Ferguson/Brown vs Board of Education.” The Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision saw the court ruling in 1954 that state-level laws on public school segregation were unconstitutional. The move, notably, marked a partial overruling from the court of its 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision.

Cornyn’s comment was widely criticized on Saturday, with the Texas Republican being called out as “racist” and “an [irredeemable] piece of shite.” See more of the ensuing discourse below.

Shortly after sharing the original tweet, Cornyn issued a follow-up in which he added, “Thank goodness some SCOTUS precedents are overruled.”

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, enabling abortion bans in a number of states. Addressing this attack on reproductive rights, President Biden cautioned in remarks delivered from Cross Hall that the “health and life of women in this nation are now at risk.”

For info on how to donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds’ Crisis Relief Fund, hit this link.

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Lizzo Teams Up With Live Nation to Donate $1 million to Planned Parenthood

SOURCE

abortion

dfp-music

dfp-music-other

Featured

live-nation

lizzo

Music

News

planned-parenthood

supreme-court

tier-one

tour

Hours after the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v.
