We’ve seen it countless times and it’s an imbalance that is sorely in need of addressing. With that in mind, Instagram have been working closely with four of the UK’s most influential Black creatives to begin work on that as part of their Black Perspectives initiative.

At the start of the year, the social media platform linked up with Kiss FM presenter Henrie Kwushue, GUAP co-founder Ibrahim Kamara, leading lifestyle influencer Estare Areola, and LGBTQ+ youth worker and community builder Tanya Compas to support them in working on projects that helped boost their position in online spaces while also empowering their own communities—either through education, networking, or offering opportunities to those who might otherwise be overlooked.

The four creatives have been working on their respective projects throughout the summer and have since seen their hard work come to fruition. In the case of Tanya Compas’ ERASURE project, which kicked the whole series off in April, that meant bringing together young LGBTQ+ to give them the practical tools, skills and confidence to tell their own stories through content creation. It was a broad spread of talents and when we caught up with her recently to ask how it all went, she explained that storytelling for them meant everything from DJing to photography and, in one case, landing their first editorial commission in Gay Times.

Later that month, Ibrahim Kamara launched #TheBrief, a six-week workshop for five Black creatives to work closely with him on a creative campaign where they got the chance to deliver a mix of editorial, video and images that centered on the themes of ‘Legacy’ and ‘Community’. Most importantly, however, it also gave them the chance to broaden their skillset and bolster their own portfolios in ways they simply couldn’t have done without Ibrahim.

In July, Henrie took things in a different direction again, launching Free Game with Henrie, an interview series hosted exclusively on her Instagram Reels where she drew from her extensive contact list to interview big-name talents from across the entertainment industry like Unknown T and Poet. A big part of the series was stripping away the gatekeeping which often stops new faces from breaking into the industry. It’s not just about sharing information that people withhold for their own sakes, it’s about breaking down difficult or uncomfortable topics like how much money people make and those early days in their career when things weren’t going so well.

The fourth and final project in the series was Estare’s The Creator Quest. For this one, Estare handed four aspiring content creators a real brand brief to see how they handled it. Taking a bit of inspiration from her favourite TV show America’s Top Model, Estare handed the creatives their brief and a time limit. Far from dropping them in it, she worked closely with each of them to help them meet their deadline and then brought in PAUSE founder Johnson Gold and YouTuber Aminato drop by and share some invaluable knowledge with the young creatives.

We caught up with Henrie, Ibrahim, Estare and Tanya to discuss their projects, their impact, and what they learned from the whole process.

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Inside ERASURE With Tanya Compas Inside ERASURE With Tanya Compas

SOURCE

complex-uk

dfp-politics

dfp-politics-social

Featured

features

instagram

instagram-blackperspectives-tanya

interviews

lgbtq

Music

News

prm

tanya-compas

This year, Instagram launched its Black Perspectives programme, which aims to empower Black creatives across several creative industries, such as fashion, entertainment and media. Instagram UK partnered with GUAP co-founder Ibrahim Kamara, lifestyle influencer Estare Areola, radio and TV presenter Henrie Kwushue and Tanya Compas, a youth worker and community builder based in South London. Compas has long been active in supporting Black LGBT youth, and one of the many projects she’s launched over the years include Exist Loudly—a London-based organisation supporting Black LGBTQ+ youth from all over the UK by providing joyous spaces, creative intervention, and digital storytelling support. She also started Queer Black Christmas, an annual event providing a community for Black LGBTQ+ folk who are estranged from or have strained relationships with their families during the Christmas period.

This time, with the full backing of Instagram, Tanya Compas decided to take the focus away from London and bring together four young Black LGBTQ+ creatives from different parts of the country to help them tell their stories unapologetically. The ERASURE project is a two-day boot camp that helps these creatives forge a career by being themselves and challenging stereotypical LGBTQ+ tropes.

We sat down with Tanya Compas to discuss ERASURE, how she came up with the idea, and how it positively impacted the young people involved.

Source link

قالب وردپرس

Instagram Launches ‘Black Perspectives’ Initiative

SOURCE

complex-uk

dfp-music

dfp-music-other

estare-areola

Featured

henrie-kwushue

ibrahim-kamara

ig-blackperspectives-1

lists

Music

News

prm

tanya-compas

As Black content creators continue to lead the way in online spaces and online trends. Whether it’s through memes, videos, dances, or even whole songs, it’s more important than ever that those Black creatives get the credit they deserve. Perhaps even more important than that is the need for social media platforms to support those individuals and help them leverage their talent into long-lasting careers.

With that in mind, Instagram has just announced a new initiative called Black Perspectives—a project designed to support Black creatives and give them the credit they truly deserve. And it’s not just about boosting the individuals making content in online spaces. The initiative has been designed to also support those creatives giving back into their community; whether it’s an event or an educational workshop, anything that empowers those people and their communities, is being supported here.

Here in the UK, Instagram is linking up with LGBTQ+ youth worker and community builder Tanya Compas, GUAP co-founder Ibrahim Kamara, Kiss FM presenter/host Henrie Kwushue, and leading lifestyle influencer Estare Areola—four homegrown creators who have risen up in online spaces to become industry leaders in publishing, music, entertainment, activism, fashion, and beyond.

First will be Tanya Compas’ ERASURE project, which launches in April, a two-day boot camp designed to help LGBTQ+ young people break down stereotypes through content creation and storytelling, and forge creative careers without compromising who they are. Then, later in April, Ibrahim is launching a six-week workshop session called #TheBrief to give five Black creatives the opportunity to work with him on a creative campaign that he’ll be mentoring to deliver editorial, video and images in response to the themes of ‘Legacy’ and ‘Community’.

Beginning in May, Henrie Kwushue will be launching Free Game, an exclusive Instagram content series where she’ll interview big names from the entertainment industry to uncover inside knowledge and pass on that wisdom to the next generation. Finally, kicking off in June, Estare Areola will run The Creator Quest, which involves a series of challenges for four aspiring content creators to see how they handle a real brand brief and if they can turn their passion into a career.

Over the coming months, each of these four talents will be working closely with Instagram to deliver their initiatives, give back to their communities and inspire the next generation of content creators. “At Instagram, we’re committed to supporting and nurturing the careers of emerging Black talent, and Black Perspectives is an embodiment of that,” says Georgia Kelly, Emerging Creator Partnerships, UK & Nordics, Instagram. “Black creators are consistently driving culture forward on the platform and too often face barriers to success in the creative industry. Together with our change-making lead creators, we’ve curated a programme that will support emerging talent to forge careers for themselves both on and off Instagram.”

Complex caught up with the creators leading the Instagram project.

Source link

قالب وردپرس
