Academy Award-winning director and Roots drummer Questlove is set to helm a live-action remake of the 1970 Disney movie The Aristocats.

Questlove, whose 2021 debut Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature last year, will also be “overseeing music,” per Variety, and executive producing via his Two One Five Entertainment company alongside fellow Roots member Tarik Trotter, Shawn Gee, and Zarah Zohlman. The script is by Will Gluck (2014’s Annie) and Keith Bunin (Pixar’s Onward).

Deadline notes it’s a “live-action hybrid reimagining” of the animated feature directed by Wolfgang Reitherman.

Questlove took to Instagram on Monday to confirm the news, writing, “They chose i to chase the cat…I basically have 2 life goals: 1. Don’t dismiss my dreams & 2. Get out of my own way.”

Two One Five Entertainment’s official Instagram wrote, “We’re In The Scripted Feature Business!!!!”

Back in September, Quest was enlisted by J Dilla’s estate to produce a new film on the life of the late Detroit producer.

“The estate of James Dewitt Yancey, and its wholly-owned production entity, Pay Jay Productions, Inc., which benefits J Dilla’s two children, his younger brother, and his mother, is proud to give its blessing to an amazing project created by discerning and talented filmmakers who knew J Dilla,” a rep for the estate said at the time. “We trust the judgment of Ahmir, Joseph, Dan, and Scenario to elevate Dilla’s life, music, and legacy to their rightful place in the canon of music’s great innovators; and their film is the only documentary project we have endorsed.”

The Aristocats news comes less than a week after it was revealed that multi-time author Questo is starting his own publishing imprint, AUWA Books, underneath Farrar, Straus and Giroux’s MCD Books.

Indeed, in a recent Instagram update, Questlove reflected on how much he “really really really” loves Yachty’s latest, notably declaring that it “might be the most surprising transition of any music career I’ve witnessed in a min, especially under the umbrella of hip-hop.”

To further detail the impressiveness of this 14-track piece of art, Questlove cited a number of past examples of what he called “departure albums,” including everything from The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band to Marvin Gaye’s Here, My Dear to Radiohead’s Kid A.

“But man….whatever you put in your Wheaties bro….keep goin,” Questlove said of Yachty’s album. “Shit like this (envelope pushing) got me hyped about music’s future.”

Mike Dean, Saul Williams, Flea, Rapsody, A-Trak, John Stamos, Nate Smith, and more later hopped into the comments to agree with Questlove’s assessment. Yachty himself, meanwhile, also responded.

Leonard “Hub” Hubbard, the longtime bass player for The Roots, died Thursday in Philadelphia at age 62.

The musician’s wife, Stephanie Hubbard, confirmed the tragic news to the ABC affiliate WPVI, saying the cause of death was was multiple myeloma—a form of blood cancer he had been battling since 2007. Stephanie told the network her husband had been energetic and mobile throughout most of Wednesday, but suddenly couldn’t move once the evening came. She said she then took Hubbard to Lankenau Hospital that night, but wasn’t allowed to stay because of COVID-19 restrictions. Hours later, she received a phone call stating her husband had died.

“I was called to the hospital. They told me what had happened that he had passed,” she recalled. “I went to the hospital and was able to sit with him.”

Hubbard was diagnosed with the cancer in the same year he left The Roots. He had joined the collective in 1992 when it was known as the “Square Roots.” He appeared on six of the group’s studio albums, including Do You Want More?!!!??! (1995), Things Fall Apart (1999), and Game Theory (2006).

The Philly native, who studied classical music at Carnegie Mellon University, spoke about his departure from in a 2007 interview with Inquirer.

“They didn’t know me from Adam,” he told the publication. “Ahmir (“Questlove” Thompson) told me to take a solo, and when he saw that I was a virtuoso, he was like ‘Oh, man, keep playing, keep playing.’”

Despite his cancer diagnosis, Hubbard remained active in the music industry, composing work for artists like Jill Scott, Ben Harper, Vernon Reid, and Jeff “Tain” Watts. Stephanie said he had also completed an album just last week.

“He wanted to be known for the type of music he was composing,” she said. “And before he died, he was sitting there at night listening to the music, and he was so happy with it.”

It’s unclear when, if ever, the project will get an official release.

You can read some of the tributes for Hubbard below.

Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter’s voice has been ringing out on records since 1987. A founding member and lead MC of Philadelphia’s legendary The Roots crew, Trotter is known for commanding the microphone in a way that few can. His all-in-one bag of technical dexterity, booming voice, and sharp wit makes his social commentary just as potent as his braggadocios bars. He’s the kind of artist who can lead The Roots on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and then turn around and drop a Funkmaster Flex freestyle that your favorite rapper tweets about. It’s this combination that also made him the perfect candidate to perform a spoken-word piece last week at Reebok’s Spoken Rights event, the beginning of a revival of the Human Rights Now! campaign.

Originally held in 1988 through a partnership with Reebok, the Human Rights Now! concert featured some of the era’s biggest names including Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Tracy Chapman. The nonprofit initiative was intended to bring attention to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the internationally recognized document that enshrines rights and freedoms to all human beings, as well as the organization Amnesty International.

For 2021, Reebok is bringing back the Human Rights Now! concept with a new collection of sneakers and apparel including the Classic Leather and Club C, a $270,000 donation to RISE (a nonprofit that aims to improve race relations within the sports community), and the return of the Reebok Human Rights Award Program honoring young human rights activists. The brand kicked things off last Friday in Brooklyn with the Spoken Rights event.

We caught up with Trotter shortly after his performance to get his thoughts on the Human Rights Now! revival, his approach to collaborations, how The Roots would fare in a Verzuz, and more. The interview, lightly edited for clarity, appears below.

Over 600 musicians, including Run the Jewels and Noname among countless others, have signed a letter calling for a boycott of performances in Israel in support of Palestine.

“In solidarity and empathy, as musicians, we cannot be silent,” reads the letter. “We are calling on our peers to publicly assert their solidarity with the Palestinian people. Complicity with Israeli war crimes is found in silence, and today silence is not an option. Silence is not an option as the brutal Israeli bombardment of besieged Gaza claimed more than 245 lives in the last weeks.”

The musicians who signed the letter also include Rage Against the Machine, Questlove and Black Thought of the Roots, Bun B, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, Chromeo, Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Majid Jordan, A-Trak, Cypress Hill, Digable Planets, Belly, and Julian Casablancas of the Strokes. The statement is led and was organized by Nicolas Jaar and Iraqi-Canadian rapper Narcy.

In the letter, the Israeli government’s actions against the Palestinian people are denounced as a “settler-colonial project committed to the ethnic cleaning of the Palestinian population.” During the most recent Israeli-Palestinian crisis, at least 254 Palestinians including 66 children were killed. An even larger number of Palestinians have been displaced, with estimates pointing to somewhere around 72,000 people.

“Today, we speak together and demand justice, dignity, and the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people and all who are fighting colonial dispossession and violence across the planet,” the letter continues. “We call for you to join us with your name in refusing to perform at Israel’s complicit cultural institutions, and by standing firm in your support of the Palestinian people and their human right to soverignty and freedom. We believe this is crucial to one day live in a world without segregation and apartheid. Free Palestine.”

On Thursday, the United Nations Human Rights council agreed to launch an international investigation into the most recent 11-day crisis to determine whether Israel and Hamas were guilty of war crimes. In response, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said the investigation is “yet another example of the UN Human Rights Council’s blatant anti-Israel obsession.” The Israeli government also received criticism after it bombed a building housing the Associated Press and Al Jazeera.

On Tuesday, Michelle Obama and other co-chairs of the When We All Vote organization dropped an open letter urging Americans to put their support behind the For the People Act.

At the moment, 43 states across the country are considering an estimated 253 proposals that could dramatically limit voting rights and access to millions of people. The letter asks Americans to call, email, and tweet at their Senators about the For the People Act, described by the When We All Vote team as the “most critical Civil Rights legislation since the Civil Rights movement.”

“What’s happening is this: After more Americans than ever voted in the last presidential election, some state leaders believe that silencing them is the only way to maintain their grip on power,” the letter, shared Tuesday, states. “They’re hoping to choose their voters, rather than the other way around. And if we as Americans stand idly by—if we wait for others to act or we refuse to do so with anything other than clear purpose and full-hearted patriotism—they will succeed.”

More than 60 notable voices—including When We All Vote co-chairs, ambassadors, and supporters—have contributed their name to the open letter. Among them are Janelle Monáe, Kerry Washington, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Selena Gomez, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Amandla Stenberg, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Stephen Curry, Ayesha Curry, Carmelo Anthony, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Common, DJ Khaled, Fat Joe, Issa Rae, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Kal Penn, Keke Palmer, Laverne Cox, Leonardo DiCaprio, LL Cool J, Martin Lawrence, Regina King, Ryan Reynolds, Shaquille O’Neal, Taraji P. Henson, The Roots, Yara Shahidi, and many more.

Below, read the open letter in full:

“To the American People:

We write to you today as citizens who love this country and care deeply about its future. And right now, the most important thing we can do to protect that future is to rise together in support of the For the People Act currently before the Senate—the most significant piece of legislation to strengthen our democracy since the Civil Rights movement.

On January 6th, a violent mob laid siege to our nation’s Capitol, determined to overturn the results of a presidential election that their preferred candidate lost. It was a shocking and outrageous assault on our democracy—and a sobering reminder that we can no longer take our system of self-government for granted. In the months since, a new president and vice president were sworn in and some insurrectionists are now facing justice for their roles in that historic day of shame.

Yet we cannot act as if the threat to American democracy has passed.

Already this year, in state houses across the country, more than 250 bills spread across 43 states have been introduced to further weaken our democracy and make it more difficult for Americans to vote. These bills seek to make it harder to register to vote and cast a ballot by limiting early and mail-in voting and setting up more barriers that particularly impact Black, Brown, and young people. Some of these undemocratic measures have already become law, with others surely to follow.

What’s happening is this: After more Americans than ever voted in the last presidential election, some state leaders believe that silencing them is the only way to maintain their grip on power. They’re hoping to choose their voters, rather than the other way around. And if we as Americans stand idly by—if we wait for others to act or we refuse to do so with anything other than clear purpose and full-hearted patriotism—they will succeed.

Our nation was founded on the idea that as citizens, we should be able to determine our nation’s destiny. Generations of Americans have rightly organized, marched, and died to defend that ideal and expand voting and civil rights to women and minorities—a story that continues to this day. Today, the moment calls for us to take up that patriotic call to protect and expand those rights once again. And that’s why we must rally behind the passage of the For the People Act.

This bill is not about choosing one party or one issue over another. It is about commonsense reforms and best practices that make our democracy more open, more fair, and more inclusive. It is about reaffirming our founding principle that we can chart our own course as a nation.

The For the People Act is about moving closer to the America we aspire to be—a land of opportunity where every voice is heard and valued. Among the tremendous progress it promises, this bill will

Expand automatic voter registration, adding as many as 50 million people to voter rolls;

Expand same-day and online voter registration for federal elections, which are especially important for young people and first-time voters;

Allow for pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds, so that when they get their driver’s license, they are also registered and ready to vote when they turn 18;

Require two weeks of early voting for federal elections, including on the weekends and after work, and increased access to vote-by-mail, so no American has to decide between making their voice heard and earning a living, taking care of their family, or staying safe during a pandemic;

Make Election Day a national holiday, making it easier for more Americans to cast a ballot;

Restore the right to vote for people with felony convictions, which disproportionately impacts minority communities;

Strengthen federal criminal penalties for those who misinform and intimidate people at the polls;

Overhaul our campaign finance system to give ordinary Americans a greater voice in the political process and afford a more diverse array of people the opportunity to run; and

Ban partisan gerrymandering and discriminatory voter purges.

We applaud the House for passing this bill, and now we urge the Senate to follow suit and do its part to protect our democracy. And if that means eliminating or instituting meaningful reform to the filibuster—a relic of Jim Crow and an arcane chamber rule increasingly abused to create gridlock and forestall progress—the Senate should act. We cannot continue to allow the will of the majority of Americans to be overshadowed by an oppositional few fixated on maintaining power. Because make no mistake, as a recent poll showed, large majorities of Americans support this bill across party lines—including more than half of Republican voters.

So today we call on Americans of conscience and goodwill to join us in taking a stand for voting rights and to put the power more firmly in the hands of the people. We urge every American to remember how it felt to watch as our Capitol was desecrated earlier this year—and to channel that outrage into patriotic duty.

We are asking you to join us by calling on your Senators to pass the For the People Act immediately—you can join our efforts right now at www.WhenWeAllVote.org.

Just as those who came before us turned the crack of a baton or the spray of a firehose into a Voting Rights Act; just as those who turned literacy tests, poll taxes, and other forms of discrimination into organized, concrete, and hopeful action on behalf of their votes, we too can make our mark on history. We too can right wrongs in our time and pave the way for those who come after us.

We can do so much better as a country. But we’ll never be able to do it alone. Now is our best chance to protect and strengthen our democracy and put power back where it belongs—with the people. We ask you to stand with us.

With hope,

The Roots’ annual Jam Session is going completely virtual this year.

The pre-Grammy Awards event will be live-streamed across various platforms and will take place without an in-person audience. The hip-hop group, which has been hosting the session for over a decade, will perform alongside artists like Ari Lennox, Tobe Nwigwe, Ant Clemons, Emily King, Jon Batiste, Brittany Spencer, and Kathy Sledge.

The Roots’ co-founding member Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter spoke about the annual event during a recent Tidal interview, in which he provided some insight into its origins and overall purpose.

“It’s something that we started as almost the antithesis to the more formal functions that would take place in Los Angeles on the night before the Grammy Awards …” he explained. “It’s become a tradition, almost a cultural institution of sorts … It’s a function that bridges the gap between up-and-coming artists, already established legends and icons, Grammy-nominated artists, and The Roots. It’s something that we started as a chance to rock out and jam, and celebrate the moment …”

You can stream The Roots’ Jam Session now on Oculus, the Venues, and via Tidal above.
