Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br /> </p> <div data-module="subbuzz-text"> <p>Two years after he was arrested for his connection to gang-related crimes in a racketeering case, <a href="https://www.complex.com/tag/casanova" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Casanova</a> has received his prison sentence.</p> <p>The Brooklyn rapper, who was facing up to 60 years in prison, on Tuesday was sentenced to 188 months (or over 15 years) behind bars.</p> <p>Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, made the announcement in a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/recording-artist-casanova-sentenced-188-months-prison-gang-related-racketeering-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>. U.S. District Judge Philip M. Halpern’s sentencing was for Casanova’s racketeering and narcotics offenses. </p> <p>U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said, “Caswell Senior is not just a notorious recording artist, but he is also a high-profile leader of a vicious street gang and a magnet for gang violence. At a crowded Miami house party, Senior personally fired a gun that seriously injured and could have killed a victim, inciting a shootout. Further, Senior’s stature in the community was central to Gorilla Stone’s successful recruitment and nationwide expansion. Today’s sentencing — along with the other significant sentences that have been imposed in this case — shows once again that gang life is not worth it and will lead to many years in prison.” </p> <p>Back in January, Casanova <a href="https://www.complex.com/music/casanova-says-he-would-be-free-if-higher-ups-look-into-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pleaded</a> guilty to racketeering and narcotics offenses in connection with his leadership role in the Untouchable Gorilla Stone Nation Bloods Gang. As part of his guilty plea, the 36-year-old told prosecutors he played a role in a July 2020 Florida shooting and a New York City robbery in 2018, while also admitting he trafficked over 100 kilograms of marijuana.</p> <p>Cas was one of 18 alleged gang members who were indicted in December 2020 on the aforementioned criminal charges. During an April interview with <em>XXL</em>, the rapper spoke about the new project, originally titled <em>The Voice 2.0</em>.</p> <p>“Growth. That’s what the 2.0 stand for, just be on another level,” he explained. “Just not only music-wise, like the things around me like I told you, growing from the friends around me, management. Sitting with the mayor. We doin’ big charity things. In an appearance in court on Wednesday, May 24, Fetty, whose real name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, received his sentence for his participation in an alleged trafficking ring spanning […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br /> </p> <div> <p>Following his guilty plea to federal drug charges last year, rapper <a href="http://www.complex.com/tag/fetty-wap/" target="_self" rel="noopener">Fetty Wap</a> has been sentenced to <span style="font-size:15px"><strong>six years in prison, the <em>New York Times</em> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/24/nyregion/fetty-wap-sentenced.html#:~:text=Fetty%20Wap%2C%20a%20New%20Jersey,trafficking%20narcotics%20across%20the%20country" rel="noopener">reports</a></strong></span>.</p> <p>In an appearance in court on Wednesday, May 24, Fetty, whose real name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, received his sentence for his participation in an alleged trafficking ring spanning across the United States.</p> <p>His lawyers pushed <a href="https://www.complex.com/music/a/tracewilliamcowen/fetty-wap-lawyers-push-minimum-5-year-sentence-drug-case" target="_self" rel="noopener">for a minimum five-year sentence</a> in the case, citing financial issues as a result of COVID-19 pandemic. “Suddenly it felt like life was going in reverse and he became ashamed when he began to struggle to keep up the lifestyle that he created for so many,” his lawyers argued. “His judgment became impaired. Desperate to keep up with his financial obligations, Mr. Maxwell became involved in the instant offense for a few months in the spring of 2020.”</p> <p>Per <a href="https://www.insider.com/fetty-wap-sentencing-drug-dealing-after-making-millions-music-2023-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Insider</a>, prosecutors argued he should serve at least seven years and three months because he did not need to supplement income from music with drug trafficking money. “He had a lucrative career as a rap artist and the ability to make an honest living and provide for himself and his family,” the sentencing memo said. “Indeed the defendant told the Probation Department that he made $5 million during his music career. Nevertheless, this defendant chose to supplement his income by trafficking large quantities of drugs — drugs he knew would ruin lives.”</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>Fetty pleaded guilty in federal court in August 2022, although he stressed via his attorney that he was not cooperating with the authorities. “He is not cooperating, I want that to be very, very clear,” his attorney said. “This is a standard plea.” He was estimated to face between 87 to 108 months behind bars upon entering his plea. <a href="https://www.complex.com/music/second-man-fetty-wap-drug-case-pleads-guilty-faces-5-years-life-in-prison" target="_self" rel="noopener">Two other individuals in the case</a>, New Jersey corrections officer Anthony Cyntje and his brother Robert Leonardi, accepted guilty pleas prior to Fetty.</p> <p>The “Trap Queen” rapper was arrested in October 2021 and was accused of obtaining over 100 kilograms of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and crack cocaine between June 2019 and June 2020, and transporting it from the West Coast for distribution in Long Island and New Jersey. My words may not mean much right now, but I take full accountability for my actions. I’m committed to continuing to work on myself.”</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>While the Grizzlies organization has already suspended Morant “from all team activities pending league review,” the NBA has yet to deliver a ruling on the matter. However, according to Rivera, Hov wasn’t the one who stabbed him, though he won’t say who he believes did. </p> <p>“What happened that night… I showed up to [the party] to support [Q-Tip]. Jay, a bunch of us is in there. I ended up getting surrounded by a bunch of people. It was probably 10 knives that I knew of, and I ended up getting stabbed at the Kit Kat Club,” Rivera recalled.</p> <p>When asked if Hov stabbed him, Rivera said, “No. Jay-Z was not the guy that actually stabbed me that night.”</p> <p>Rivera maintained that he and Jay did in fact have an emotional conversation that night, with the latter telling him that he “broke my heart.”</p> <p>“Me and Jay-Z had a conversation right before I got hit in the head with a champagne bottle,” Rivera shared. “It was a brief conversation and I was looking at him like, ‘What are you talking about? The athlete’s alma mater announced the decision on Friday, about 10 months after it began looking into <a href="https://www.complex.com/sports/buffalo-bills-rookie-matt-araiza-accused-of-raping-17-year-old" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rape allegations</a> against the <a href="https://www.complex.com/tag/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NFL</a> free agent.</p> <p>“While the university cannot provide specific information related to its student disciplinary proceedings and investigations, or specific information related to student records, it can confirm that none of the former students named in the civil suit are now the subject of an active investigation,” SDSU said in a statement to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/37685136/san-diego-state-university-no-findings-matt-araiza-other-students?platform=amp" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>ESPN</em></a>. “In addition, they are not currently enrolled, active students or affiliated with any athletics activities. SDSU reserves the right to reinstate investigations based on new developments.”</p> <p>In 2022, a teen girl accused Araiza and two of his college teammates of raping her during an off-campus party in October 2021. The accuser, who was 17 and intoxicated at the time of the alleged assault, claimed Araiza had thrown her onto a bed and gang raped her along with SDSU students Zavier Leonard and Nowlin Ewaliko. </p> <p>The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office declined to press criminal charges against the men, citing a lack of evidence in both its own investigation and another conducted by the local police department. The office said its probe included 35 witness interviews, DNA analysis, and nearly a dozen search warrants.</p> <p>“Ultimately, prosecutors determined it is clear the evidence does not support the filing of criminal charges and there is no path to a potential criminal conviction,” the DA announced last December, just several months after the accuser filed a civil complaint against Araiza, Leonard, and Ewaliko.</p> <p>Araiza was released from the Bills just two days after the complaint was filed. The suit is set to go to trial this October. If he’s ultimately found liable in the civil case, Araiza will not be subjected to NFL punishment, as the alleged incident took place before he was drafted last April.</p> <p>According to <em>ESPN</em>, Araiza has submitted a claim against SDSU for damage to his reputation.</p> <p>“I am aware that the facts of this case have been made public,” Araiza told <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/matt-araiza-expresses-gratitude-prosecutors-031055132.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pro Football Talk</a> last week. “I am deeply gratified for the thorough work of the DA’s office in San Diego and for all the witnesses that were willing to come forward and tell the truth. I can only hope that now people will assess me on the facts and not what was falsely claimed in both the civil suit and in the press.”</p> <p>He continued: “I am beyond thankful for the unwavering support of both my family and friends. They have been a rock in what has been a very dark eight months for me. However, now that the truth is out, I am amazed by the thousands of emails and tweets supporting me.
