In a statement shared with Complex in January, for example, Miller’s attorney confirmed their plea agreement in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/tracewilliamcowen/ezra-miller-plea-agreement-vermont-burglary-case" rel="noopener">a burglary case in Vermont</a>.</p> <p>“Ezra Miller pled guilty this morning to a misdemeanor unlawful trespass in Vermont Superior Court and accepted the conditions imposed by the court,” the attorney told Complex at the time. “Ezra would like to thank the court and the community for their trust and patience throughout this process, and would once again like to acknowledge the love and support they have received from their family and friends, who continue to be a vital presence in their ongoing mental health.”</p> <p>As for the film itself, which at one point was speculated as being in potential jeopardy due to Miller-focused headlines, DC Studios co-CEO <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/james-gunn" rel="noopener">James Gunn</a> said earlier this year that he considered it to be “probably one of the greatest superhero movies.” Those remarks were made as part of a private press event, <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/ezra-miller-dc-future-the-flash-recover-james-gunn-1235507014/" rel="noopener">per</a> <em>Variety</em>, and also included an update from fellow DC Studios boss Peter Safran on Miller’s recovery efforts.</p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>Tuesday’s trailer was preceded in February by a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/tracewilliamcowen/michael-keaton-batman-the-flash-trailer-reactions" rel="noopener">Super Bowl-premiered look</a> at the film that included looks at both <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/michael-keaton" rel="noopener">Michael Keaton</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/ben-affleck" rel="noopener">Ben Affleck</a>, both of whom are again <a target="_blank" href="http://complex.com/tag/batman" rel="noopener">on Batman duty</a>.</p> <p>Up top, catch the new <em>Flash</em> trailer. The filmmaker’s other credits include 2018’s<em> Little Woods</em> (her feature directorial debut), the aforementioned <em>Candyman</em> entry in 2021, and a pair of <em>Top Boy</em> episodes in 2019.</p> <p>Back in 2021, DaCosta spoke with Roxane Gay about the experience of following up <em>Little Woods</em> and <em>Candyman</em> with a massive production like <em>The Marvels</em>. As DaCosta explained, the sheer scale of something like this allows her the opportunity to work with “the best people in their field” at every level of the filming process.</p> <p>“My first film, if we didn’t get it within the schedule, it was never going to happen,” DaCosta <a target="_blank" href="https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/nia-dacosta-roxane-gay-interview" rel="noopener">said in the Inverse feature</a>. “There was no additional photography. …Whereas on this, I’ll be like, ‘Oh God, I have to rush,’ and they’re like, ‘No, don’t rush. The story introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted, and fiery young woman whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.” </p> <p>In an interview with <a href="https://collider.com/elemental-director-peter-sohn-interview-pixar/?newsletter_popup=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Collider</a>, Sohn spoke about how the movie was inspired by a personal story about his immigrant parents. “That personal hook was definitely a driver and a North Star for me in terms of thanking our parents and just hitting these themes of a culture clash. But it’s not an autobiography, so there is a way to disconnect from [my story],” he said. </p> <section class="suitcase-ad" /> <p>The director added, “Obviously, I’m not an element, but some of the themes come from a real place. … Something about these themes is just very universal, so that’s been great fuel to make this, but at the same time, it is vulnerable. I can’t lie, it’s a vulnerable act to just go, ‘Oh, right, these are some of the issues that I had with my parents and with trying to fit into a country that I was born in.’ It’s getting naked all the time, and having people judge it, so that will hurt. But at the same time, it’s made by so many people that I can’t take all the credit.”</p> <p>In addition to the <em>Elemental</em>, Disney and Pixar will release a short film sequel to box office hit <em>Up</em>, titled <em>Carl’s Date.</em> The short will follow the protagonist’s first date after his wife Ellie’s passing.
