The Washington Wizards of the late-aughts were a traveling circus, what with its rotating cast of oddballs that included Gilbert Arenas, Nick Young, and JaVale McGee.

Though the era is best remembered for the 2009 incident in which Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittendon brought loaded guns to the Wizards’ locker room, Swaggy P claims that another gun-related event occurred earlier that year.

In a recent interview with VladTV, Young recalled a time when Arenas once shot him with a BB gun during an NBA gun awareness meeting.

“My dumbass ended up bringing the BB gun to the gym just to scare him, just to play around with him,” Young shared. “But it was a gun, an NBA gun rule meeting. So, I’m in the meeting and Gil go into my locker room, take my gun, come into the guns meeting, shoot me with my gun in front of everybody while they’re talking about gun rules and stuff. … Nobody said nothing.”

Alas, the good-natured BB gun fight would be overshadowed by what happened on Dec. 21, 2009, when beef over a card game escalated to a confrontation that saw Arenas bring four unloaded guns to the Wizards locker room to threaten Crittendon.

In a 2018 interview with The Action Network, Arenas shared details of how the infamous gun incident went down. “Hey, MF, come pick one,” Gilbert told Javaris while pointing to the weapons. “I’m going to shoot your [expletive] with one of these.”

“Oh no, you don’t need to shoot me with one of those,” Javaris responded, before pulling out a loaded gun and pointing it at Arenas. “I’ve got one right here.”

Both players were suspended for the remainder of the season, and Crittendon never played in the league again.

Nick Young weighed in on the situation involving Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka, who was suspended last week for the entire 2022-23 season after engaging in an “intimate” relationship with a woman on the team’s staff.

Back in 2016, Iggy Azalea called off her engagement with Young after he admitted to cheating on her in a video recorded without his knowledge. He was taped by his Los Angeles Lakers teammate D’Angelo Russell. It was later revealed Young got ex-girlfriend Keonna Green, the mother of his son Nick Jr., pregnant.

Young and Green got engaged three years after his split with Azalea.

“It don’t matter about the woman,” Young told VladTV at the 3:00 mark above. “I think men just get bored sometimes, and things happen when you get bored.”

When asked to share some words of advice, Young was optimistic about the future for Udoka and his fiancée Nia Long. “I think it’s gonna work out. They’ve been in a relationship for too long. My situation was different, I got recorded,” said 37-year-old Young. “That’s Nia Long, though.”

Young also revealed he had a somewhat similar situation during his first year with the Washington Wizards. He and a teammate were “messing around with” a woman associated with the team, and when it was discovered, she was the one who got fired.

“It happened to me when I was a rookie,” Young said. “Me and Andray Blatche [were] messing around with, I think, one of the cheerleaders, or an assistant, and then they found out. Then we came to the gym, people were blaming us like it was our fault ’cause she got fired or something like that.”

See the highlight in the tweet above, and watch the VladTV video up top.

The first blockbuster trade of the NBA offseason was a doozy.

Tantalizing rumors that this transaction might happen first circulated roughly a week ago and it surprisingly came together quickly as the Wizards shipped Russell Westbrook to the Lakers, taking some major shine away from Thursday’s NBA Draft. Los Angeles sent Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrel, Kyle Kuzma, the No. 22 pick in this year’s draft, and two future second-round picks to Washington to complete the trade.

There’s a brand new big three in Los Angeles as the 32-year-old point guard, the 2017 NBA MVP, joins another new team for the third straight offseason. This time he gets to team up with LeBron James and Anthony Davis as the Lakers instantly upgraded the star power of the league’s most glamorous franchise. While the addition of Westbrook adds a ton of money to the Lakers’ ledger that could inhibit their ability to build around the new trio, it undoubtedly makes Los Angeles the team to beat in the Western Conference despite some holes that currently exist on the roster.

As always with these major NBA transactions, there are winners and losers that need to be highlighted. So without further adieu, let’s dissect what easily could be the biggest trade of the offseason.

During Wednesday’s game, a Philadelphia 76ers fan made the awful decision to toss some popcorn on Russell Westbrook as the Wizards star was on his way to the locker room after getting injured.

Westbrook’s ankle injury, as well as the popcorn throwing, went down during the fourth quarter.

As you can imagine, the popcorn tossing did not go well with a visibly upset Westbrook having to get restrained by several people. The fan who threw the popcorn was subsequently identified and ejected.

Following the game, Westbrook, who scored 10 points, was asked about the disrespectful incident by reporters.

“This shit is getting out of hand, especially for me,” Westbrook said. “Just, the amount of disrespect… fans doing whatever the fuck they wanna do. It’s out of pocket, man. It’s out of pocket.”

Westbrook’s teammate Bradley Beal called the display “disgusting.”

LeBron James took to social media to also comment on what went down, writing, “By the way WE AS THE PLAYERS wanna see who threw that popcorn on Russ while he was leaving the game tonight with a injury!! There’s cameras all over arenas so there’s no excuse!”

Following the game, Valerie Camillo, President of Business Operations for the Wells Fargo Center, condemned the person who threw the popcorn at Westbrook.

“This was classless, unacceptable behavior, and we’re not going to tolerate it at Wells Fargo Center,” Camillo wrote. “We’re proud to have the most passionate fans in the country and the best home-court and home-ice advantage around, but this type of behavior has no place in our arena.”

The 76ers won on Wednesday with a final score of 120-95 and are now leading against the Washington Wizards 2-0 in the first-round playoff series. The two teams will face again on Saturday at Capital One Arena.

Last year’s NBA Playoffs were unconventional, to say the least. After the regular season abruptly got put on pause due to the pandemic, games restarted months later down in the Orlando bubble. Along with the new locale came a new format, new energy, and when the dust settled new champions were crowned with the Lakers besting the Heat to take home the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

This year’s postseason already has a different feel, too. Following the first-ever play-in tournament to determine the 7th and 8th seeds in the East and West, the stage is set for every basketball fan’s favorite time of year—the start of the NBA Playoffs.

With the first round kicking off today, it’s winner takes all as the 16 best teams in the League face off on the quest for the chip and the bragging rights that come along with it. Every team has something to prove and with stacked rosters all around, the door is wide open for a new champion to emerge.

Fueled by MVP candidate Joel Embiid and Defensive Player of the Year hopeful Ben Simmons, the 76ers claimed the top spot in the East. Nonetheless, the new-look Nets—featuring the three-headed monster of Kevin Durant (27.5 PPG), Kyrie Irving (27.2 PPG), and James Harden (25.1 PPG)—are an imposing foe as the No. 2 seed. And, to the delight of the New York diehards, the surging Knicks step into the Playoffs with a fire that could make for some interesting matchups.

Meanwhile, two surprise teams—the Jazz (the first team to clinch a playoff berth) and Suns—came out on top of the West. Donovan Mitchell (26.4) has emerged as a legitimate superstar, and the Stifle Tower Rudy Gobert has stymied opponents, swatting 2.7 shots per game. Behind young star Devin Booker and the leadership of Monty Williams and Chris Paul, the Suns (49-21) have experienced a rapid turnaround after finishing 34-39 in 2020-21.

The defending champion Lakers may be entering the postseason as the West’s No. 7 seed, but no one is sleeping on them. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the charge, everyone expects the Lakers to outperform their position.

With the first game of the postseason tipping off in a few hours, here’s a rundown of the matchups going into opening weekend of Round 1:

Russell Westbrook’s wife Nina is not happy with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith and took to social media to let her thoughts be known.

Nina’s response comes on the heels of Smith saying he doesn’t “give a damn” that the Washington Wizards player broke the franchise’s triple-doubles record. Westbrook scored an impressive 35 points, 21 assists, and 14 rebounds in his team’s 132-124 win against the Pacers on Monday.

“And here’s the thing about Westbrook’s big night: I don’t give a damn about any of it,” Smith said on Tuesday, per Yahoo Sports. “Because the Wizards aren’t very good. They’re not going anywhere. You’re 17-28 in the Eastern Conference for crying out loud. You’re not going anywhere, and this isn’t the first time Russell Westbrook has played on a team that has fallen short.”

Smith continued, “If Russell Westbrook was a better 3-point shooter, could you imagine what he would’ve done? I’m here to tell you he would’ve won a championship by now.”

“So… how tiring it is to be minding your own business and have notifications pop up on your phone about people being negative and hating on your family,” Nina Westbrook wrote on her Instagram Stories in response to Smith’s commentary. “There are several things wrong with what @stephenasmith says here.”

She continued her string of posts aimed at Smith by recalling her husband being criticized by a commentator back when he was a UCLA student playing for the Bruins.

“Ironically, Russell makes history and @stephenasmith comes out of nowhere to share his non-congratulations,” she wrote. “When he does bad we hear about it, when he does will we don’t hear about it OR @stephenasmith has to make sure that his accomplishments are diminished. Respectfully, I’m not a fan of yours.”

Nina went on to write, “Russell is the happiest he’s ever been. Not having a championship does not ‘hurt him a lot.’ You know nothing about him. If you did, you’d know that he is way way way more than a championship. He is a champion of life. A champion of his people. He doesn’t care about YOUR championship, and certainly not YOUR opinion.”

You can read Nina Westbrook’s comments below.

Russell also responded to it all after he was asked about Smith’s comments.

When is enough going to be enough?

Because as the Wizards waste away another season and Bradley Beal keeps balling at an All-NBA level, the questions about how much longer the star shooting guard will put up with losing in the nation’s capital figure to only get louder. And if we’re basing assumptions about desire and devotion based on body language, Beal ain’t exactly giving off positive vibes these days. Would anybody be surprised if sooner rather than later he requests the Wizards ship him out of DC?

…Wizards lose by 18 pic.twitter.com/LSs5t4OpjV

— Complex Sports (@ComplexSports) January 28, 2021

We already saw one superstar force his way out of a miserable situation in January and while Beal doesn’t exactly have the influence over his organization anywhere near like James Harden did with the Rockets, their situations do feature some parallels. Beal, a 27-year-old two-time All-Star selection and a top 20 player in the league smack dab in the middle of his prime appears frustrated with the Wizards who forever can’t get their shit together. The acquisition of Russell Westbrook has done nothing to make Washington better, the prospects of the Wizards’ fortunes drastically changing for the better appear far-fetched, and Beal only has one more year remaining after this season on the extension he signed back in 2019 before he can opt out. It feels like something has to give here.

While the Wizards probably aren’t going to actively shop Beal just yet because they won’t start sweating about the prospects of losing him for nothing until the summer, surely they will continue to field phone calls and maybe even some offers from teams interested in the sharpshooter’s services as the league watches Washington wallow. So what would a deal for Beal look like? And what teams could make a serious play for the Wizards’ leading scorer? Just a few weeks after shipping Harden to Brooklyn secured Houston an absurd amount of first-round draft picks, it’s an intriguing exercise trying to forecast what a deal for Beal could net the Wizards and what teams could credibly land him.

Wednesday evening’s Russell Westbrook for John Wall trade that caught the basketball world by surprise looks like the quintessential “we’ll trade our problem for your problem and hope for the best.” But there are always winners and losers in every NBA transaction and when players of Westbrook and Wall’s caliber get dealt it’s nuanced.
