Chelsea Clinton Confronted Over Ilhan Omar Tweets At NYU Christchurch Vigil

Written by on March 16, 2019

Chelsea Clinton was confronted during a vigil for the victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks by people claiming that Clinton’s rhetoric supported these sorts of incidents.

In a video captured by a bystander, an activist can be seen berating Clinton over tweets she posted following comments made by Rep. Ilhan Omar.

“This right here is the result of a massacre stoked by people like you and the words that you put out into the world,” she said. “I want you to know that and I want you to feel that deep inside. The 49 people died because of the rhetoric you put out there.”

They were likely referring to a tweet seconding the idea that Omar used anti-Semitic language in her denunciation of money from pro-Israeli lobbying groups in Congress.

In the moment, Clinton said that she never intended to cause harm.

“I’m so sorry that you feel that way,” Clinton said. “Certainly, it was never my intention. I do believe words matter. I believe we have to show solidarity.”

The confrontation between the student and the pregnant Clinton led to bipartisan support for the former member of the First Family. Donald Trump. Jr. called the video “sickening” on Twitter.

“It’s sickening to see people blame @ChelseaClinton for the NZ attacks because she spoke out against anti-Semitism. We should all be condemning anti-Semitism & all forms of hate,” he said. “Chelsea should be praised for speaking up. Anyone who doesn’t understand this is part of the problem.”
