Background

The year was 1999, and Garth Brooks was presenting a new project to the world from beneath the more rock-centered alter ego of Chris Gaines. Now, the year is somehow 2019, and Childish Gambino is introducing a new generation to the one-off project’s biggest Hot 100 hit “Lost in You.”

This is all made possible by a recent Gambino appearance on Triple J, the same station where the multi-hyphenate previously gave his rendition of Tamia’s “So Into You.” As always, you’re best served by simply watching footage of the moment I’m writing about below, wisely avoiding the task of reading more tediously concocted filler.

With Greatest Hits (a.k.a. Garth Brooks in The Life of Chris Gaines), the country giant fully committed to the performance art piece, even hosting Saturday Night Live in November 1999 as himself while filling the musical guest slot in full alter ego mode.

Garth, if you’re reading this, now’s a good great time to revive the Chris Gaines experiment. To further that point, consider the fact that The Tennessean recently let the world know that fans of this brief chapter of the Garth legacy are planning to gather at East Nashville bar The Cobra for the 20th anniversary-celebrating Gainesfest 2019: A Celebration of the Life of Chris Gaines. Naturally, the get-together boasts a cover band and a Chris Gaines lookalike contest that’s certain to spur some serious competition among attendees.
