Chris Evans departed the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Endgame, which saw a number of cast members say goodbye to their respective roles. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow was among those to die during the events of the film, but she’s already got her eponymous standalone prequel on the way. Evans, however, wrapped up the arc of Captain America with his last appearance.

In the latest edition of Variety‘s Actors on Actors interview series, Evans sat down to talk with his co-star Johansson about whether he would think about reprising the role. “Would you come back?” she asked him.

“To Marvel? Well, I’m a old man now. … You never say never, I love the character. I don’t know,” Evans replied.

The two also praised the chemistry of the entire cast, but it would appear that’s not enough to get him back onboard. “It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either,” he continued. “There are other things that I’m working on right now. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together.”

Johansson, who is reprising her role, made it clear she generally agrees with his sentiment. “I wasn’t there for the last third of the film or whatever,” said Johansson. “I actually had no idea what was going to happen. I don’t know how it worked, exactly, if it was scripted. It was such a beautiful cathartic ending, and I loved that for Steve. I think he deserved that. It was all his happiness.”

Chiming in, Evans added, “It’d be a shame to sour that. I’m very protective of it.”
