Christian Group Demanded Netflix Cancel ‘Good Omens’—a Series That Airs on Amazon Prime

A Christian group took a big ol’ L this week, after launching a petition that called on Netflix to cancel Good Omens. The problem? The six-part series airs on Amazon Prime.
“The Netflix series ‘Good Omens,’ based on a book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, portrays the agents of Good and Evil as fighters in an arbitrary struggle devoid of meaning and truth,” Return to Order’s petition stated. “This series presents devils and Satanists as normal and even good, where they merely have a different way of being, and mocks God’s wisdom […] This is another step to make Satanism appear normal, light and acceptable. We must show our rejection. Please sign our petition, telling Amazon that we will not stand silent as they destroy the barriers of horror we still have for evil.”
After catching wind of the inaccurate and amusing petition, Netflix and Amazon decided to have a little fun.
Return to Order has since corrected their demands and expressed regret over the mistake:
Due to an oversight by Return to Order staff, this petition originally listed Netflix as responsible for the offensive series “Good Omens.” Amazon Video released the series on May 31. We regret the mistake, and the protests will be delivered to Amazon when the campaign is complete.
As of Friday night, the petition had garnered more than 20,000 signatures—a figure that will likely rise thanks to all the publicity the group’s error has garnered.
Good Omens, which premiered on Amazon Prime back in May, is based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s 1990 novel of the same name. The series stars Michael Sheen as the angel Aziraphale and David Tennant as the demon Crowley, an unlikely duo that sets out to prevent the apocalypse.
The Christian group claims the show “mocks God’s wisdom” in a number of ways: by depicting an angel-demon friendship, portraying the anti-Christ as a young boy, and using a woman’s voice for God.
