Christopher McQuarrie Will Direct Consecutive ‘Mission: Impossible’ Films

Written by on January 15, 2019

Christopher McQuarrie was given the opportunity by Paramount Pictures to direct back-to-back Mission: Impossible movies should he choose to accept it—and accept it he did.

Variety reports that McQuarrie, who directed the long-running series’ biggest hit at the box office with 2018’s Mission: Impossible — Fallout (which made almost $800 million), has signed on to write and direct the franchise’s next two films. Prior to Fallout, McQuarrie also directed 2015’s Rogue Nation, marking the first time in the series’ six-movie history that the same director did consecutive films.

Also, the next two Mission: Impossible entries will be shot back-to-back and hit theaters in the summers of 2021 and 2022. Here’s a Tom Cruise tweet for proof:

Obviously, Cruise will be back as Ethan Hunt in the next two pictures. He’s also scheduled to star in Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, which drops June 26, 2020.
