Christopher Nolan’s New Film Will Be a Cross Between ‘North by Northwest’ and ‘Inception’

Written by on March 7, 2019

UPDATED 3/6/19 7:31 p.m. ET: A rep from Warner Bros. reached out to Complex to advise that the original description of Christopher Nolan’s next film, which came from a now-deleted tweet from Production Weekly, was inaccurate. They also advised that there’s currently no new information on Nolan’s next project.

See below for original story published on 3/5/19.

Details on Christopher Nolan‘s first post-Dunkirk movie have been very characteristically hush-hush since it was first announced that he’d at least get something on the big screen in summer 2020. But on Tuesday, a clue was provided in the form of a Production Weekly report, suggesting that Nolan’s next film will be a mash-up of two classics. According to the report, the film is being described as a “romantic thriller” in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock’s North By Northwest and Nolan’s own polarizing film Inception.

Consider that narrowed down.

The film will also see Nolan once again join forces with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, whom he previously worked with on Dunkirk and Interstellar:

It sounds like there’s a lot of ways this could go, especially when you factor in the “romantic” part of “romantic thriller” clue. After all, big screen romance isn’t exactly Nolan’s strong suit.

The movie is set to begin production in June, setting it up for a tentative July 17, 2020 release date. One would expect more details to come out sooner rather than later, but with Nolan involved, who the hell knows.
