Cobie Smulders to Star in ‘Stumptown’ Pilot Based on the Graphic Novel

Written by on February 26, 2019

Cobie Smulders will make her return to primetime network television to play the lead role of Dex Parios in the ABC pilot Stumptown, Variety reports. Based on the graphic novel written by Greg Rucka, the project tells the story of Dex, a “strong, assertive, and unapologetically sharp-witted army veteran” who has returned to her hometown of Portland, Oregon where she works as a private investigator.

Even though Parios is tasked to solve other people’s messes, she is also dealing with some issues of her own, which include an inability to keep a steady job, and a growing gambling debt. Dex is an incredibly complicated human being, but she’s still a “heroine you can’t help but get behind,” Variety writes.

Smulders’ last time on primetime network television was in the ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. where she played Maria Hill, a role that she has reprised in a number of films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including every installment of the Avengers franchise. Her claim to fame on the TV front, however, may still be her turn as Robin Scherbatsky on the long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother

Despite being on the unfortunate end of Thanos’ Snapture, Smulders is expected to return to the MCU as Hill in Spider-Man: Far From Home later this year.  Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit theaters on July 5, 2019.
