College Beach Party in California Leads to Multiple Medical Emergencies

A rowdy college party led to a number of medical emergencies in Santa Barbara County, California.

The New York Post reports that the beach party in Isla Vista, called Deltopia, takes place every year during the first weekend when students come back from spring break. Thousands attend the illegal soirée, which first reportedly began in 2010.

This year’s bash got so wild that the Santa Barbara County Fire Department first reported a multi-casualty incident, citing “multiple medical emergencies including multiple severe traumas,” according to Public Information Officer Daniel Bertucelli.

Calls reporting medical emergencies were flooding first responders on Saturday afternoon, including a woman who fell from a roof at around 1:15 p.m. Other calls were about people potentially overdosing on drugs and alcohol.

First responders set up a triage system at around 3:30 p.m. to quicken the process of transporting patients to different local hospitals. However, later that night, Bertucelli “rescinded the MCI as call volumes have dropped to reasonable levels.”
