Comedy Central has already ordered a second series of Awkwafina‘s upcoming comedy series, Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, before the show premieres later this month.
The announcement of the second season came earlier this week, according to Indie Wire. The series starring Nora “Awkwafina” Lum co-stars D Wong, Bowen Yang, and Lori Tan Chinn. It is executive produced by Lucia Aniello, Karey Dornetto, and Teresa Hsiao.
The confirmation of a second season continues an impressive year for Awkwafina. Although she wasn’t recognized by the Academy, she received a Golden Globe for her role in The Farewell, winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. This follows her break out performance in 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians.
Awkwafina also executive produced her upcoming Comedy Central series. It is a coming of age story that details her experiences as a young adult in Flushing, Queens.
“I made a point to draw on very true realities of my life, of my growing up, of who I am,” Awkwafina said when describing the show during the TCA panel. “In the character of Nora, I don’t think she’s overdrawn in any way. She’s as real as I can play her.”
Awkwafina is Nora from Queens features a host of co-stars including, Celia Au, Matthew Broussard, Michelle Buteau, Jamie Chung, Laverne Cox, Deborah S. Craig, Jennifer Esposito, Chrissie Fit, and more. Aniello, Lyonne, Jamie Babbit, Steven Tsuchida, Anu Valia, and the Daniels have signed on as directors.
To promote the show, Awkwafina is giving her own spin on subway announcements for riders on the 7 line in Manhattan and Queens. The recorded messages feature funny asides and a bit of New York humor. You can listen to a few of them here.
The first episode of the series is set to premiere on Jan. 22, 2020.
