Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff Advances in Wimbledon Comeback and Fans Are Hype

Written by on July 5, 2019

Cori “Coco” Gauff, the youngest player to qualify for Wimbledon, continues to dominate the tournament.

On Friday, the 15-year-old from Atlanta advanced to the fourth round after with a stunning come-from-behind victory against Slovenia’s Polona Hercog, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, on Centre Court. Gauff thwarted Hercog’s match-point when Gauff was down 6-3, 5-2, plus another match-point later.

Gauff, who is now one win away from the quarterfinals, will take on 25-year-old veteran Simona Halep this Monday. The Romanian won the 2018 French Open and is now the No. 6-ranked women’s singles player in the world.

Gauff made headlines this week after she won her first-round Wimbledon match against five-time singles champion Venus Williams

The teen has credited Venus and Serena Williams as two of her biggest inspirations. “Honestly I don’t really know how to feel,” Gauff said after defeating Venus. “This was definitely the first time I ever cried after winning a match. I don’t even know how to explain how I feel. I had to tell myself to stay calm, I’d never played on a court so big. I had to remind myself that the lines are the same size.”

She continued: “I just told [Venus] I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her, she’s so inspiring. I’ve always wanted to tell her that but I’ve never had the guts to before.”

Following her win against Venus, Gauff beat Magdalena Rybarikova in the second round in straight sets.
