Cory Booker Needs $1.7 Million Before October to Continue Presidential Campaign

Written by on September 21, 2019

Cory Booker‘s presidential campaign is in dire need of donations.

According to a memo obtained by ABC, Booker’s campaign manager Addisu Demissie says that the candidate needs to raise $1.7 million before Sept. 30 to stay in the race. Demissie explains that Booker would not meet the “increase in the DNC’s debate-qualifying thresholds, which would require significant funds to meet” without help from the public.

“Other campaigns have, in recent weeks, surpassed us in scale and begun spending on paid persuasion efforts online and on television,” Demissie’s memo reads. He also doubled down on this claim during a press call, telling the media that if Booker doesn’t meet the threshold he will have to drop out. “We got in this race to win it,” Demissie said. “We’re not running for second place, and this is not an attention-getting effort for Cory Booker.”

The $1.7 million is just the minimum amount Booker needs to collect. Per Demissie, the candidate has to accumulate as much money as possible so that he can put together a competitive campaign. Between April and June, Booker raised $4.5 million and spent $5.3 million. This is behind the top tier Democratic candidates. But, he’s not the only presidential hopeful in this position. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke both generated fewer funds than Booker.

“This is a real, unvarnished look under the hood of our operation at a level of transparency unprecedented in modern presidential campaigns,” the memo reads. “It is probable there are only four campaigns in this race with the money necessary to build and sustain the national organization needed to win the nomination.”

According to ABC News September poll, former vice president Joe Biden leads the polls with  27 percent, Sen. Bernie Sanders polled at 19 percent, Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 17 percent, and Sen. Kamala Harris at seven percent. Booker only pulled in one percent of the votes.
