Couple Arrested After Spending Nearly All $120,000 Accidentally Deposited in Their Account

Written by on September 10, 2019

Robert and Tiffany Williams, of Montoursville, Pennsylvania, were arrested on charges of theft and receiving stolen property, after the couple attempted to thwart their bank after spending nearly every last dime of the $120,000 that was accidentally deposited into their account, the Williamsport Sun-Gazette reports

On May 31, a BB&T teller mistakenly deposited the money meant for Dimension Covington Investment LLC into the Williams’ account, and as practically everyone else would’ve done, they spent it.

Over the course of a two-and-a-half week span, the couple withdrew more than $100,000, and used the cash on a $15,000 down payment on a 2015 Chevy Traverse, a $4,500 camper, among other items. They also used their newfound wealth to pay off some bills, as well as contribute $15,000 to help out their friends.

BB&T discovered the error and withdrew the money from the Williams’ account, creating an overdraft of $107,416. In an affidavit provided by State Trooper Aaron Brown, the couple, who were “aware that the money deposited in their account did not belong to them,” allegedly had $1,121 in their account prior to the teller’s mistake.

Brown claims Williams “told the bank her husband had spent a great portion of the funds and purchased a four-wheeler. She said she would speak to her husband and attempt to construct a repayment agreement.” However, after the bank encountered several failed attempts to contact the couple, the authorities were brought into the fold in early July.

The Williamses were arraigned Tuesday and released on $25,000 bail each.
