Dakota Johnson kicked off the 2023 Sundance Film Festival with a biting joke about Armie Hammer, who in 2021 was accused by exes of having cannibalism fantasies.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson took the stage at Sundance’s “A Taste of Sundance” dinner on Thursday night to present director Luca Guadagnino with the international icon award. Guadagnino’s 2017 film Call Me By Your Name starred Hammer alongside Timothée Chalamet.

While presenting the award to Guadagnino, Johnson joked that her not being cast in Call Me By Your Name saved her from being a victim of Hammer’s sexual harassment.

“Luca had asked me to play the role of the peach but our schedules conflicted. Thank God though, because then I would’ve been another woman that Armie Hammer tried to eat,” she said.

After pivoting to focus on Guadagnino’s accomplishments, Johnson delivered another zinger: “Who knew cannibalism was so popular?” she said, referring to Guadagnino’s most recent film, Bones and All.

Back in 2021, Hammer faced backlash after a woman who says she had an intimate relationship with him created an account on Instagram to share gruesome details of the bizarre sexual interactions she says they used to have.

The woman has also shared screenshots of explicit conversations that allegedly occurred between Hammer and multiple women via Instagram DMs. While most people wouldn’t be surprised at the nature of dirty talk or sexting in 2021, the alleged conversations included talk of rape fantasies, the desire to inflict pain on his partners, and one in which the actor reportedly said he was “100% a cannibal.”

Hammer has denied the allegations.
