Los Angeles-based producer and DJ Ras G has died. The cause of his death is unknown. He was 39 years old.
Born Gregory Shorter Jr., Ras G gained notoriety for almost serving as an extension of the legendary Sun Ra with his genre-blending, intergalatic, spacey sound. He worked with his contemporaries within the L.A. Beat scene, like Open Mike Eagle, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus, and performed as a solo act, as well as under Ras G & the Afrikan Space Program.
Ras G was rushed to the hospital on December 17 over complaints of shortness of breath. Although being diagnosed with pneumonia, diabetes, hypothyroid, and heart failure, he reassured his fans that nearly two weeks later, he was “breathing and feeling better than ever.”
Since his death, the responses have been pouring in as they pay their respects to Ras G.
