Derek Jeter Was 1 Vote Shy of Being Unanimous Hall of Fame Inductee and People Are Upset

Written by on January 22, 2020

When Derek Jeter decided to call it a career in 2014, no one questioned whether or not he would receive enough votes to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. It was just came down to whether or not he would be voted in unanimously by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. After all, it wasn’t out of the question. It happened to longtime New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera just last year.

On Tuesday, the 397 ballots were cast, and Jeter easily surpassed the 75 percent threshold to officially punch his ticket to Cooperstown. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he received 396 votes, or 99.7 percent, which means that one person didn’t vote for The Captain, and people are pissed and they want answers.

The search for the identity of this one person who prevented Jeter from being unanimously voted into the Hall of Fame should tell you that the voter remains a mystery. It’s for the best.
