Doja Cat Says She Spoke With Cardi B About “Press” Controversy

Doja Cat insists there is no bad blood between her and Cardi B.
The “Mooo!” artist received backlash this month over a resurfaced video in which she seemingly mocked Cardi’s hit single “Press.” Though the video was taken in early June, it didn’t begin generating controversy until a couple of weeks ago, after DJ Akademiks reshared the clip on social media.
Many were quick to slam Doja over the Instagram Live broadcast, which received a dismissive comment from Cardi herself: “Do anything for clout … Moo,” the “Press” rapper commented on Akademik’s since-deleted post.
However, Doja claims her impression was not intended to be malicious. She addressed the situation during a recent interview with Big Boy, claiming she was hopped up on Flo Rida’s energy drink Celsius at the time she posted the video.
“So I drank it and, man, I’d never been that hyper, I think, in my entire life … I drank all of it in 10 minutes,” she explained (10:25). “And I was in the car, we were going to the zoo, and I was super excited, and I had the radio on, and then her song came on, and I was—like I do with myself and everybody else—I was making fun of the song. But it’s a dope song. I acknowledged that, as well. And people edited out the parts where I was acknowledging that it was great.”
Doja went on to say she and Cardi have since discussed the incident and cleared the air.
“I spoke to Cardi and she was really sweet and understanding,” Doja said. “She’s a smart woman and I feel like she probably makes fun of her friends and other celebrities. That’s just something you do when you’re either hopped up on caffeine or lit.”
Doja said she understands why some fans are so protective over their idols, but believes some people can take it too far.
“The only thing that really, really made me feel upset was the death threats,” she said. “That happens. You know, it’s the internet. It’s a crazy place. People feel safe—they can say whatever they want, but I think that’s definitely excessive.”
Doja also discusses her reaction to Jermaine Dupri’s “stripper rap” comments at around the 14-minute mark.
“You stand up for what you believe in,” she said. “I believe in female rap. I believe there are talented female rappers out there that aren’t one-dimensional. It’s OK to be one-dimensional, by the way…. I like that. I like when people can talk about…their coochie, you know?
