While Spider-Man: Far From Home is full of references to the previous Marvel movies, the film almost included another reoccurring character.
During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers revealed that they considered having Donald Glover making another cameo.
“We definitely considered that. We definitely thought, ‘How great it would be to bring back Aaron Davis again,'” McKenna said.
Glover made his first appearance for the franchise in Spider-Man: Homecoming as Aaron Davis. Peter first encounters Aaron Davis as he’s trying to buy stolen weapons. Glover then returns to provide Spider-Man with information that helped him defeat the film’s main villain, Vulture. Although it’s unknown how McKenna and Sommers planned to work Glover into Spider-Man: Far From Home, the ideas were ultimately phased out due to the movie’s overall plot.
“We went down that road a little bit, then the movie really spent such little time in Queens and gets to Europe pretty quickly. Some ideas you just have to give up,” McKenna said.
“That’s really what it came down to,” Sommers added. “We loved that character and we wanted to do it, but we just wanted to get out of New York and get on the trip as soon as possible. There were several things we would have loved to do in New York before he left, but we just didn’t have time.”
Glover might still be part of the Marvel universe in the future since he’s already worked with Spider-Man and his adjacent characters. He played Miles Morales and Norman Osborn in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. Marvel announced in 2017 that Glover had been selected to create an adult animated series based on Deadpool for FX. The plans were unfortunately scrapped.
