Donald Glover Shares Behind-the-Scenes Look at ‘Guava Island’

Earlier this year Donald Glover and Hiro Murai released their highly-anticipated Guava Island film, which starred Rihanna and also featured different versions of some of Childish Gambino’s more recent output. In a surprise bonus a number of months later, the illusive Glover has announced that there are some behind-the-scenes features to dig into on Amazon’s website and YouTube.
Among the newly released videos showing how the project came together is a closer look at the dancers, the kids and actors who were cast in the film, the locations used, and the music.
Guava Island was shot on location in Cuba in the summer of 2018, and the production crew clearly wanted to use the local artists, actors, and stunning locations. The behind-the-scenes footage gives an intimate look into the talent that made the film so special. Some of the videos even feature narration from Glover himself.
“At its best (or maybe just its most accessible), art is ingenuity. I had the pleasure of experiencing this spirit of ‘making what you must with what you have’ collaborating with Cuba’s talented and abundant artists over the course of filming Guava Island,” Glover said in a statement. “The artist’s endeavor has always been the manifesting of an idea, then forcing a society to recognize, or maybe just question, its value. These artists have not only inspired me to examine what we value on a day-to-day basis, but also to move with intention in the world with the childlike ingenuity that Cuba seems to offer every moment. I’m very proud to be able to share their stories with you.”
