Donald Trump Blames California for Deadly Forest Wildfires

Written by on November 10, 2018

Two huge wildfires that have forced thousands of homeowners to evacuate are still ongoing in California, and the president can’t wait until the situation is dealt with before acting out. President Donald Trump has already taken it upon himself to place the blame squarely on “gross mismanagement of the forests.” Even worse, he’s now threatening to withhold federal funds.

In his first tweet about the wildfires, Trump wrote, “There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forest. Remedy now, or now more Fed payments!” Reaction to the tweet has, understandably, been overwhelmingly negative.

At least nine people have been killed since the fires started, and USA Today reports that the northern California town of Paradise has been completely destroyed. During the fires in California back in August, Trump made a similar remark, placing his vague blame on “bad environmental laws.”

Katy Perry, who expressed her gratitude to all the first responders in California Friday night, called Trump out on his response to the fires. “This is an absolutely heartless response,” she tweeted.

Winds carried the wildfire overnight, with BBC reporting that over 150,000 people have been evacuated.
