Donald Trump Doesn’t Appear to 100 Percent Agree With Alabama’s Anti-Abortion Law

Written by on May 19, 2019

Surprisingly, Donald Trump might think Alabama’s newly passed anti-abortion bill is too extreme.

Trump tweeted on Saturday night that he’s pro-life except in three specific cases: “Rape, Incest and protecting the Life of the mother—the same position taken by Ronald Reagan.”

Alabama’s newly enacted law doesn’t make exceptions for victims of rape or incest, and only permits abortions in cases where the mother’s life is at risk.

On Wednesday, Republican Gov. Kay Ivey signed an anti-abortion bill into state law, essentially banning all abortions. The bill also classifies abortions as a Class A felony, which could result in up to 99 years in prison for physicians who perform, or attempt to perform, the procedure. The Missouri Senate followed suit with its own bill, which still needs to pass the Republican-controlled House.

In subsequent tweets, the president implored conservatives to remain united on the issue, while blasting liberals for “imploding” on the matter of late-term abortion “and worse.”
