Drake Cut Off Air After Criticizing Grammys During Best Rap Song Acceptance Speech

Drake used his acceptance speech for the Best Rap Song to denounce the entire idea of the Grammys. While holding a trophy for his song “God’s Plan,” Drizzy took a second to point out that the award he just won was meaningless. 

“We play in an opinion-based sport, not a factual based sport. It’s not the NBA where at the end of the year you’re holding the trophy because you made the right decision or won the games,” he said. 

Drake added that the voters in the Academy might not be the most qualified to decide the worth of music from people like himself, Cardi B or others. (He has a bit of a point, considering they just named a rap song Song Of The Year for the first time.) He closed the speech by letting his competitors know that the real measure of whether or not they had won anything was when they went on the road and saw their fans lining up to sing along to their songs.

“You’ve already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero in your hometown,” he said. “Look, if there’s people who have regular jobs coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows. You don’t need this right here. I promise you, you already won.”

The producers at the Grammys eventually heard enough and cut the rapper’s speech short. Drake won the award over his collab with Travis Scott song “Sicko Mode,” Jay Rock’s “King’s Dead” and “WIN” and Eminem’s “Lucky You.”

Fans definitely noticed that Drake was shading the Grammys in their own house.
