Dwayne Johnson, Issa Rae Set to Executive Produce Scripted Wrestling Series

Written by on April 21, 2020

In a relationship that makes perfect sense when you consider that he: A.) Stars in Ballers, and B.) Is a freakin’ wrestling legend, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to executive produce a half-hour series for HBO that centers around the creation of a backyard wrestling league.

According to Variety, who first reported the news, Issa Rae and Dany Garcia are also set to executive produce.

Currently going by TRE CNT (also “Tre Count”) the series will center around a young protagonist who works at a dock and also wrestles on the side (Cassius Jones). He goes on to inherit his grandfather’s life-insurance money and the deed to his house, which he turns into a “hip-hop centric backyard wrestling empire,” along with help from family and friends. The series will be set in Houston’s Third Ward (which is where ‘The Tre’ comes from).

The show will be written by Mohamad El Masri, who also will executive produce.

Johnson and Garcia will serve as executive producers under their Seven Bucks production banner. Rae will serve as executive producer through her production company, Issa Rae Productions.

As alluded to above, the show will further tie the Rock to the premium network. Ditto for Rae and Gacia. Johnson starred in Ballers, which concluded it’s final season last year. Garcia also executive produced that show.

Recent projects that were produced by Seven Bucks include Jumanji: The Next Level, and Fast and Furious Present: Hobbs & Shaw. Obviously both of those are films that star Johnson. For the future, they’ll be the company behind his upcoming movie The Jungle Cruise. In addition to backing his big-screen projects, the company also produces shows like The Titan Games and Rock the Troops

As for Rae, she stars in and serves as an executive producer for Insecure, which she also co-created. The fourth season of that just started up Sunday, April 12. She also had an executive producer credit for HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show.
