An unusual neon blue light flooded the Manhattan sky on Thursday night, sparking concern and panic among NYC residents.
NBC New York reports the light was a result an electrical emergency at a ConEd power plant. The NYPD confirmed that authorities were investigating a transformer explosion in Astoria. Officials are urging residents to avoid 20th Avenue and 31st Street.
A spokesperson for ConEd told NBC that multiple fires broke out after “couple of transformers tripped offline.” The explosions caused power outages in several Queens neighborhoods. Power is also down at LaGuardia airport. As a result of the electrical emergency, the FAA reported there was a ground stop at LaGuardia Airport until 10:30 a.m. Friday.
