Elon Musk Says Twitter Is Now Sharing Ad Revenue With Blue Subscribers

Written by on February 4, 2023

Elon Musk is offering more incentives for Twitter Blue sign-ups.

The billionaire tech mogul announced on Friday that the platform would start sharing ad revenue with eligible users. Musk said those who are subscribed to Twitter Blue Verified will receive a cut of the revenue from ads that appear in their reply threads, but failed to provide additional information on how the program would work.

Twitter currently offers a few monetization options, including its Super Follows and Tips features.

“Starting today, Twitter will share ad revenue with creators for ads that appear in their reply threads,” he wrote. “To be eligible, the account must be a subscriber to Twitter Blue Verified.”

A Twitter Blue subscription comes with exclusive features and perks, including the highly coveted verified check mark, the option to edit published tweets, and the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes long. As of now, the premium subscription service costs $8 a month or $84 per year. (Those who subscribe directly through iOS pay $11 a month.)

Depending on how the ad revenue program works, subscribers may be able to recover the subscription cost through viral tweets. But, again, Musk and Twitter have yet to lay out any specific details, like how much of the revenue Twitter will share and how creators will get paid.

Musk reassured users he and his team will provide more information in the near future.

“More to come on this front,” he tweeted. “Twitter needs to be where a creator is most highly rewarded for their time & talent.”
