ESPN Reportedly Set to Offer Deal That Would Make Tony Romo the Highest-Paid Sportscaster

Written by on January 13, 2020

ESPN is reportedly looking to pry Tony Romo away from CBS by making him the highest-paid sportscaster in television history. According to Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports, the Worldwide Leader in Sports is prepared to extend an offer to Romo between $10 million to $14 million annually.

With Romo nearing the conclusion of the final season of his three-year contract with CBS, his representation has expressed to the network that he wants $10 million per year. His current deal gives him $4 million annually. The Ringer notes that John Madden currently stands as the highest-paid analyst in NFL history after receiving $8 million from Fox in 1993.

That will surely change as ESPN will be joined by Fox in the Romo sweepstakes, with the expectation that Amazon and Google could also throw their hat in the ring since both companies may look to acquire the rights to NFL games starting in 2021-22. Given Romo’s proven proficiency as an NFL analyst, he can easily command more than the reported $7 million per year that ESPN was willing to offer Peyton Manning if they could lure him into taking a job on Monday Night Football.

A return to CBS isn’t out of the question since they have the right to match an offer.
