‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Director Responds to Oscars Backlash

Co-director Daniel Kwan of Everything Everywhere All at Once has some words for critics ahead of the Sunday night’s Oscar award show.
The award-winning A24 flick is up for eleven Academy awards, including a hopeful win for Best Picture. Kwan took to his Twitter to share his thoughts and asks for his fan for a favor.
The director noted that he would deactivate his social media post-award show to avoid possible negative commentary. “The last thing I ask of any fans of our film is to be gracious and kind tomorrow. Especially if we don’t pick up any awards that you might have felt we deserved,” Kwan wrote.
“I love every one of the films we are up against for different reasons. More importantly, I have grown to love the people behind each of the films as I have gotten to know them this year. I already have everything I could ever want, and there is no need to be angry on our behalf,” he continued.
The film received backlash for alleged anti-Semitism for naming a character called “Big Nose,” played by Jewish actress Jenny Slate. Other critics who are rooting for Todd Field’s Tár and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin believe the sci-fi movie will “sweep” the Best Picture and Best Actress categories.
Kwan continued sharing his concerns, saying he does not believe a film can “sweep” a category.
Everything Everywhere All at Once debuted a year ago on March 11 at SXSW 2022. This film’s synopsis reads: “When an interdimensional rupture threatens to unravel reality, the fate of the world is suddenly in the hands of a most unlikely hero: an overwhelmed immigrant mother, [Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh)]. As bizarre and bewildering dangers emerge from the many possible universes, she must learn to channel her newfound powers and fight to save her home, her family, and herself.”
Kwan signed off to all the haters writing, “I’m sorry we ruined cinema for you forever,” Kwan quipped. “I hope we can make it up to you on the next one.”
