Ex-Florida Deputy Faces Nearly 100 Years in Prison for Failing to Confront Parkland Gunman

A former Broward County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested Tuesday for “his complete inaction” during the 2018 Parkland school shooting.
The New York Times reports Scot Peterson has been charged with neglect of a child, culpable negligence, and perjury. The officer resigned after he faced heavy scrutiny for failing to confront the gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018. He was on the campus at the time of the shooting, but remained outside while the shooter killed faculty, staff members, and students.
“The FDLE investigation shows former Deputy Peterson did absolutely nothing to mitigate the MSD shooting that killed 17 children, teachers and staff and injured 17 others,” commissioner Rick Swearingen said in a statement. “There can be no excuse for his complete inaction and no question that his inaction cost lives.”
