First Two Episodes of ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Aren’t as Long as Previously Thought

Written by on March 12, 2019

The runtimes for the first two episodes of Season 8 Game of Thrones appear to be more in line with previous installments, and less like the “movies” we were previously promised. Winter Is Coming discovered Sunday that HBO released its upcoming schedule, which broke down the specific runtimes for Episode 801 (54 minutes) and 802 (58 minutes).

These runtimes fall short of the even 60 minutes for the first two episodes reported by French TV channel Orange Cinéma Séries.

These runtimes also don’t come anywhere close to what GoT actor Kit Harington had predicted in an interview with Mirror this past January. “We know we have six episodes—we are not sure whether they will run for 70 minutes or even 90 minutes,” Harington said.

That same month, HBO chief Richard Plepler spoke with Variety about what he took away from watching Thrones’ final six episodes. “It’s a spectacle,” he said. “The guys have done six movies. The reaction I had when watching them was, ‘I’m watching a movie.'”

Whether the runtimes are 60 minutes, 80 minutes, whatever, these final six Thrones episodes are sure to be an event regardless.
