Footage Shows High School Football Coach Disarming Student Who Brought Gun to School

Last May, an Oregon high school football coach disarmed a student who brought a gun on to the campus. Video of that incident—obtained by KOIN 6 News—was finally released this weekend.
In the clip, coach Keanon Lowe is seen taking a shotgun away from 18-year-old Angel Granados-Diaz before hugging the student. The two share an embrace for close to 10 minutes. At one point, Lowe sits down with Granados-Diaz as they wait for the police to arrive.
“It was a really emotional time,” Lowe said to KOIN 6 News, a CBS affiliate. “Emotional time for him, for me. In that time, I felt compassion for him. A lot of times when you’re young, you don’t realize what you’re doing until it’s over.”
According to court documents, Granados-Diaz did not have plans to go on a shooting spree. The student was experiencing a mental health crisis and the gun was loaded with a single round for an apparent suicide attempt. Granados-Diaz pleaded guilty to gun charges at last week’s hearing. He was sentenced to three years of probation and mandatory mental health treatment.
