Former University of Texas and Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson has died. According to multiple reports, Benson was involved in a motorcycle accident in Austin on Saturday night. KVUE reports that the crash also took the life of an unnamed woman, and that Benson was declared dead on the scene.
Benson’s brother also seemingly confirmed the news.
As Longhorn Republic points out, Benson was arguably one of the best backs in school history. He ran for over 1,000 yards in all four seasons that he played for the school. His total yards and touchdowns fell only behind Ricky Williams. He was a member of the Longhorns team that beat the Michigan Wolverines to win the Rose Bowl.
Benson was drafted 4th overall in the 2005 draft by the Chicago Bears, and also played for the Cincinnati Bengals, and Green Bay Packers during his NFL career. He had three 1,000-yard seasons in the NFL, all with the Bengals.
Benson was 36 years old.
