French Montana on How COVID-19 Will Reveal Which Rappers Saved Money
Written by SOURCE on April 18, 2020
It’s no secret the music industry has been severely impacted by the coronavirus. Over the last month, a growing number of festivals, tours, and other live gigs have either been postponed or canceled because of the widespread lockdowns, resulting in financial losses for almost everyone involved. And although there’s no doubt most big-name artists will be just fine, French Montana is convinced some of his fellow rappers may have to make hard financial decisions to keep themselves afloat. Why? Because they failed to save for a rainy day.
“There’s so many things we don’t appreciate … Everybody is getting put to test about one thing and one thing only: Was you saving money when you was rapping?” Montana said during a remote interview with TMZ. “Did you build a capital? Did you build something, like a retirement plan?”
He went on to say that he has been a saver throughout his career, because he had dreams of stepping away from the game in a comfortable position. Unfortunately, he says, many other artists have not done the same.
“You don’t see something like this coming,” he continued, referring to the COVID-19 crisis. “There’s a lot of artists out there that live check-to-check. There’s going to be a lot of garage auction. I’ll tell you that much.”
You can hear Montana’s full comments above. He also speaks about his love for directing and his plans to release a film about his life.
Montana also made headlines this week for squashing his beef with Jim Jones. The two former foes hashed it out via Instagram Live on Thursday night, and encouraged other rappers to follow their lead.
“If there’s anybody out there watching from the young n****s, man, learn from this,” Montana said. “Don’t waste 15 years in the game when y’all could have been getting all kinds of bags together.”
